Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet Feather Forestwalker

Too bad for Chung that Japan averages around fifty minor tremors per
day. G Even if Japan had had a huge earthquake, it would not qualify as "global." |

Love it..... Can you believe this, Mark? Twenty years ago TODAY, I moved to the area I am in now. Lived in Nevada for 5 years prior to that........ ......some folks were saying that Reno would have beachfront property. . ..*LOL* Ahhh, legends. Earthquakes. We're still waiting for "the big one" that will "rip California in two" Where's the one that was 'supposed' to hit YOU today? One of my mates was the head geologist on the Sydney Harbour Tunnel. He once told us that Newcastle (NSW, Oz) would never be hit by a major earthquake. That was just before the big earthquake at Newcastle which we felt miles away in Maitland. See report and pics at http://www.ga.gov.au/urban/factsheet..._newcastle.jsp My kids were playing "Tippit" at the time ... a game of balance. Nothing fell though the house shook. |

The quake, which struck at 7:32 p.m., was centered about 80 kilometers under the seabed off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, according to the agency. Moderate shaking was felt in Fukushima and neighboring Miyagi, the agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Japan, which sits atop four tectonic plates, is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. (AP) Here is the USGS world map showing recent worldwide earthquake activity. The area near Japan has minor quakes all the time, as does Alaska and California. Can you? I can: Forecast: transitive senses 1 a : to calculate or predict (some future event or condition) usually as a result of study and analysis of available pertinent data; especially : to predict (weather conditions) on the basis of correlated meteorological observations b : to indicate as likely to occur (Brittannica) Thus a japanese seismologist could predict an earthquake for any given day in Japan and state the likely magnitude based on data for previous earthquakes. Based on my knowledge of earthquakes I think I can predict with a considerable degree of accuracy that there will not be a noticeable earthquake where I am now before the end of the month. I can say with confidence that the worst that could happen would be a minor tremor that very few people will notice. These occur roughly one per year. I say this even knowing that there is a major fault line (The Craven fault) not far north of here and an even bigger one (The Great Glen Fault) in Scotland. I can predict with absolute certainty that there will not be a volcanic eruption in the British Isles before the end of the month, even though there are several dormant vocanos here, one of which was very active at one time (the one overlooking Edinburgh once produced larva flows as far south as the line of Hadrian's Wall between Newcastle and Carlisle) I can also predict there will be no Hurricanes here in Yorkshire but maybe a gale or two by the end of the month. I can also predict with absolute certainty that there will not be a Tsunami over the beaches on the Holderness Coast this year. There is however a remote possiblity that one might strike the West Coast of Ireland as well as the Eastern Coast of North America. -- Les Hellawell Greetings from: YORKSHIRE The White Rose County |
