I swear to you this is true. I just now saw this commercial
on tv for a show with that name. TLC (the learning channel)
Script went:

Well, he only eats ice cream and sugar and he
won't exercise, but what can I do about it?

That's the mother explaining to the cashier all the crap
she's buying and her overweight son is gobbling donuts
before they're even paid for.

They say the show will show parents what their kid
will look like at 40, age enhanced whatever.

Can you *believe* the timing? Premiere's April 10th.

Gag. :-(

My parents never let me get away with that kind of crap......

While I don't believe in forcing kids to eat what they don't like,
limits still have to be set!

I have a friend who is quite overweight, very, and she had a
child. She swore, my child will never be fat. That's what she
told me, I hadn't asked, so it was on her mind.

People would tell me they saw her food shopping, the kid
was in the cart seat (that's how young) with an open box of
Twinkies eating them as fast as he could.

My parents would never have allowed that, people can say
it's holier than thou if they want.

Her son is grown, now he's in the hospital with life
threatening heart problems all the time, now he's got
other issues. Never had a chance.

I really feel that people should do what they want to
themselves, but geez, don't put your little kid in the position
they'll have to fight their weight all their lives! I know, I
could be yelled at for saying so, but I that's what I
think.

I saw that commercial last night. I was in a word, shocked.

When the hell will adults learn that if they don't buy it, their
children won't have ready access to it? I feel sorry for pediatricians
these days who are in aposition to attempt to educate such ignorant (or
is that stupid?) adults that they not only have control over thier
children's diets, but that they also need to grow a backbone and
exercise that power.

The kids won't exercise, read,go outside, blah, blah, blah. Well, who
was it that bought the video games, computer games and pays the bill
for cable and internet?

I don't know. I predict parents would say, you don't
understand.

They'd be right, I don't.

Show should be interesting.

Interesting and very good timing! Maybe they will uncover some of the
things we haven't so far.

I've been rather vocal regarding the poor on the other thread but on
this issue, I will admit to being downright judgemental. Parents have a
resposibility to their kids. IMO allowing kids to do as the want or eat
what they as far as junk food are being negligent.

Our philosophy when raising kids, not that ours is right and others are
wrong, was we were the parents. While we listened to our kids and took
their viewpoint into consideration because building respect is
important, there were times that whether they liked it or not our word
was the final say. As far as nutrition, I've mentioned that in other
posts but simply no white sugar, no candy, no processed meats including
hotdogs but they could have all the fruit or vegetables they wanted
without asking. We had a pool in the summer and ice rink in the winter
so our kids always had friends over. We did a lot of camping! Now we
do a lot of boating Our kids are now adults and we still have a very
close relationship. We don't go a day without talking to one or more of
them. Most days we see at least one if not more of them. We still get
together Sundays for dinner, every Sunday even though one or more can't
come. Quite often they bring a friend or two for dinner. As a family
we were always into board games with our current favourite Joker -
something like parchesee but played with cards - and there is always a
poker game once a week with friends of ours that includes their kids and
ours.

A couple of things I've noticed is to this day none of our kids go for
sweets but the fruit bowl is the first thing raided when they get in the
door. Movies still tend to be a family thing. Their friends tend to
hang out here as much as they do. I don't know whether we did things
right or wrong but so far I'm happy with the results

aaaaagh
I just posted about that in another thread!
I'm tired of parents feeding their kids crap and saying they have no control
over it.

I'm not the most in shape person, but dammit, I'm aware of the correlation
between what I eat and what my ass looks like.

Please indulge me for being slow about this, but I don't understand
your reference to believing the timing. Others apparently do. May I
politely ask you to amplify?

On a related matter, I heard something on a San Francisco Bay Area
radio station (KGO) this week that caught my attention. At first I
anticipated that this was where you were going,
but evidently not.

It had to do with a radio ad in which a bunch of kids are swarming
their dad/mom begging for all manner of junk food by saying "Please
(Mom/Dad), give me some diabetes" or words to that effect.

Apparently a diabetes related organization objected saying that the ad
disrespected people with diabetes, which struck me as an odd point of
view. The ad itself (if accurately reported) also seemed odd.

As I've said in other threads too. I so totally agree with you. I've
gained weight as an adult and I really should be more careful with what I
eat, but it's my decision as an adult - I'm aware ofthe consequences, but it
is the hardest thing ever. If I had to struggle all my life with weight
because I had it as a kid I think I would forever feel angry with my
parents.

I would hate for my daughter to be unhealthy because of her weight and then
feel angry with me. I'm the one responsible for her health and that
includes what she eats. I'm not that strict, she does eat some junk, but
not all the time and I walk with her an awful lot.

Jen
