Having a Jack In The Box here would be nice. I enjoy their stuff much better than the other big ones, but unfortunately not here yet. Maid-Rite is also pretty good, but they are expensive for what you get and they went out of business here. Hey there! I am from the Springfield area (family in Springfield, Ozark, Bois D'ark, Bolivar, and Lebanon) and, when I was a kid, Steak 'n' Shake was the best chain burger you could get in Springfield. There was still a Steak 'n' Shake near Drury College a few years ago, the one where a lot of rock acts supposedly ate in the days of Drury hosting concerts on campus in the 60s and 70s. It's not the best part of town anymore (frankly, it was scary as hell a couple years ago) so maybe the restaurant has gone downhill, too. I will have to try Back Yard Burgers the next time I'm there. Stacia Ah yes, I forgot about Steak 'n' Shake! Their Steakburger is pretty good indeed, so I change my vote to them for best chain burger around here. Kinda expensive, but good quality meat. They have good breakfast as well. I've only lived here since late 2000 but I've been to a few different locations and for the most part they've been fine. I prefer either the South Glenstone or South Campbell ones though. It's semi-related to the topic, but there is a location on South Campbell that must be cursed with bad business. It has been at least 4 different restaurants in just the time I have lived here, and all the time it seemed empty. It was a Mazzio's pizza, an independent Mexican restaurant, a burger place, and now it's another independent sit-down Mexican place. Mazzio's was pretty good, but the two Mexican restaurants and the burger joint were not very good. Anyway, the burger place was called EZ Take Out Burger and was such a knockoff of In-N-Out. The way the burgers were wrapped and the burger wrapper, fry tray, and drink cup were designed was just like In-N-Out even though it didn't really taste anywhere near the quality. It was fairly expensive and the service was bad too. Too bad ![]() -Mark |

Now I see the dropdown menu in REGION! and found a bunch in New Jersey. There might be one as we pass thru NJ as there are a number of them in NJ. Thanks for helping me, Ma-der-a. Dee Dee I live in South Western Ohio and we are blessed with the White Castle Chain. They are located throughout the city and surrounding area. Perfect food for that after-drinking time. |

"limey" hitched up their panties and posted : Yesterday, CNN conducted a taste test on coffees - three unidentified carafes, one Dunkin Donuts, one Mickey D's and one BK. The Burger King coffee won hands down. Funny - I never eat at our local BK because the food is so dismal. I suppose any of them are only as good as the management. Dora I avoid fast food like the plague. But like Nancy, I have to have a "fix" of grease now and then. Fast food burgers, fries etc. wreak havoc on my cholesterol and blood glucose. Personally I prefer BK to most of the others. White Castle is, of course, my favorite ;^) Michael Like you I avoid fast food. Last week I was out of town and thought a Whopper would be nice. I can recall liking them on the rare occasions we took the kids to a fast food joint. So I sat down with my burger and took a good look then proceeded to take a bite. I was disappointed! This thing had none of the old flavour I remember. Cardboard would have tasted better! There was no flavour at all Why people continue to consume this stuff is beyond me but that tastless burger sure cured any thoughts of stopping at another fast food joint. I'm out of town again this afternoon so might treat myself to restaurant I've passed a few times. It is supposed to have really good food. |

And in a good Greek greasy spoon you can probably get Gyros of Slouvaki dinner special with soup or salad, a big order of fries and a drink for less that it costs for burger fries and a drink at McDs. I don't remember the ad, but I DO remember in Hartford, CT in 1966, going to my first McDonald's for lunch with co-workers (many of them Cuban immigrants) and all of us being pleasantly amazed at the prices. IIRC, they were something like: hamburger $.10 cheeseburger $.15 small Coke $.10 small fries $.15 (in a small paper bag, less than 3 inches square) Of course at the time there were no "meal deals" or the mega burgers they have now, no " two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, onion, pickle on a sesame seed bun". That came with competition, years later. gloria p |

I do remember that the few times I made the mistake of eating there, each incident being followed shortly thereafter by a bigmac attack, that one of their burgers fell far short of being a meal. Even their double burgers weren't much Checking their website I note that a double cheeseburger, with bun, cheese and toppings is 6.1 oz., and their fries come in skimpy servings too. There was a place where I used to have lunch regularly with co-workers where the lunch cheeseburger special was $4.95. Their single burger was quite a bit larger than McD's double burger. Their fries were a lot better, and probably 4-5 times as large an order. It was a meal. Okay... we had to pay extra for the soft drinks, but I always figured that if I had a fried burger and deep fried potatoes, I was better off without a huge serving of a sweetened beverage. I was more likely to have the Gyros special. If I went to McDonalds I had a choice of burgers. they have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, double hamburgers, double cheeseburgers, fishburgers, chicken burgers ? french fried potatoes, deep fried onion rings, deep fried chicken nuggets. The only non fried alternative was salad. This restaurant had a menu that had things that were actually different from the other choices. If I felt like bacon and eggs for lunch I didn't have to place my order before 11 am. minutes longer to get it but it will be a hell of a lot better. That is true. Those cheeseburger specials were darned good. As for waiting.... we were there once a month and the waitress knew we didn't have much time. She came and took our orders right away and we usually had the food within 5 minutes. Food comes fast at McDonalds, once you get to the front of the line. We probably got our food faster than it takes most people to get to the front of the line. |

Real fries, real burgers and milk shakes made with ice cream and milk. Back then, newspapers were a dime. Now they are a dollar. |

Mc D's hasn't just got bad, they've been crap for the last 35 years. Ever wonder why Mc D's now buys their Beef from Argentina? Argentina has really good beef. Argentinians know their beef, they eat more of it per capita than Americans do. Their Burgers don't even taste like Beef anymore, That is because most of their burgers aren't beef. Unless it is one of the ones advertised as 'all beef' it is about half soy. The QP, BM and B&T are all beef but I think the rest are soy/meat mix. -- .-')) fauxascii.com ('-. | It's a damn poor mind that ' ..- .:" ) ( ":. -.. When we were on a tight budget and my three kids were really small, I told my husband we had eaten at a fast food (Gino's in Baltimore, long gone). He asked me why on earth I had eaten there. I told him I'd much rather they left 10-cent hamburgers than have them leave a much more expensive lunch somewhere else. At least they ate the fries and the drink! Dora |
