Default Opinions on Bosch Concept Series Built-In Kitchen Machine(MEK 7000)

Does anyone possess this 700W Mixer? The base can be built into the
countertop and it has accessories to do everything from blending to
pasta making to juicing to ice-cream making from the same base. If it is
really as good as Bosch claims and if it looks good and is convenient as
a built-in, we would like to get one when we will be remodeling our
kitchen next summer. We cook and bake a lot and have done everything by
hand till now. Does it compare with KitchenAid's stand mixer.

Thanks for any help,
Kamala.

A recent issue of Cooks Illustrated compared Bosch and KA mixers as well as
others. The built-in should be basically the same as the stand-alone
models.

I guess a built-in is OK if you don't think you will move or remodel again
soon. It seems that people tend to more a lot more often then they did
years ago. Same with kitchen remodeling. If the thing is discontinued,
parts could be hard to find. Look at the Oster Kitchen Center - a built-in
that is now worthless. Also, how do you get a built-in mixer serviced and
how much would that cost? What happens once you have a big hole cut in your
counter and you decide to up-grade to another mixer? I also wouldn't assume
that the built-in and stand mixer are the same. They could be, but I
wouldn't assume anything.

You raise good points about having a built-in; our built-in oven is
broken and we have to redo the cabinet to house a new one because we
could not get a new oven that would fit. But we have lived in the same
house for 17 years(from when I was 25 years old with two small kids) and
are not the moving types. This is our first attempt at remodeling - all
our appliances are beginning to break down and we have been spending
lots of money fixing things in spite of my husband being handy. We have
a rather small kitchen with no extra counter space for a stand mixer, so
just started researching on having a built-in. I could probably do
without it especially if it is a hassle, I have been baking everything
from pizza, bread, naan, cakes to cookies from scratch and have mixed
manually all these years. So, need to figure out if having a mixer would
make my life any easier too.

Thanks for the helpful comments. I will keep them in mind.

Kamala.

I cannot speak for the particular tool you describe. But I can speak
to the quality of Bosch tools in general.

I've had the experience, over years of owning and running my business,
of buying and using a variety of electric hand tools such as drills,
screwdrivers, hammer drills and the like. These tools take a beating
and are used in all weather and often, for tasks they're really not
meant to do.

Of all the brands I've used, including Makita, Sears, Black and
Decker, Ryobi et. al., only a few brands REALLY seem to stand up.

Bosch - Milwaukee - Porter Cable. . . they lead the pack for
reliability and ruggedness. . . in my observation and opinion.

I suspect the quality of the Bosch mixer you describe would be
excellent.

As for the other human-factors aspects of the mixer. . . well, that's
pretty much a personal opinion. To me, having a mixer "built in" would
be questionable. But, maybe not! Seems to me that, in a busy kitchen
having lots of stuff on the counters, I'd want to shove that mixer
aside to get to something else. . . or to reach the other side of the
bowl. . . or. . . you know what I mean.

Of course, there's that choice of tilt or lift or both. Good luck with
your research!

Thanks for the input on Bosch. Yes, a built-in has its set of problems,
but we have a small kitchen and cook every day; there is no space for a
stand mixer on the counter. Also, the Bosch unit replaces almost all my
other appliances(blender, food processor and juicer) which will be great
for my kichen. But I need to a lot more research and see if I really
need the built-in Bosch or make do without the mixer as I have done all
these years.

Thanks again,
Kamala.

This looks like an excellent piece of equipment. However, my personal
concern is that I would never get used to having a center hub in the middle
of the bowl. That would include their other models as well.

If you're remodeling anyway, you might consider putting a stand mixer in a
cabinet with a 'pop-up'
mechanism (I think KitchenMaid makes one, but I would imagine others do,
too). That way the mixer stays off the counter, but can be instantly
popped up out of the cabinet, to working height, on its own little
counter. Accessories can be stored in the same cabinet.
And yes - having a big mixer makes _my_ life much easier!

I think the "pop-up" feature is supplied by the cabinet maker. I have a
small kitchen, but I leave my KA mixer on the counter.

Yes - that is what I was suggesting - Kitchen Maid Cabinets provide a
pop-up for use in their cabinets. Or they DID - I remember seeing ads for
them in the back of home-decor magazines, years ago.

Me, too. But I'd like a pop-up, if we ever remodel.

I think the next time around, I would just make the counters a little
deeper. I could spare a few inches of floor space, but I don't think I
could eliminate a base cabinet to hide the mixer.

Yes - deeper counters are an excellent idea, with roll-out storage
underneath.

I was thinking maybe counters that were 30 - 32 inches deep instead of 24-25
(front to back).

Pretty much what I was thinking. Not so deep as to be awkward to reach the
back, but deep enough to allow 'stuff' to be kept there, while still having
room to work.
