Hunt Camp Breakfast - Extra Nice Pic for Pic Haters!

Default Hunt Camp Breakfast - Extra Nice Pic for Pic Haters!

This pic is dedicated to those pic haters here. As always *if you don't
want to view the pic, don't click the link* silly.

Here's a pic of the meat cooked up for the final breakfast at the hunt
camp. DH was quite proud of himself for taking a pic of this so I could
share with my cooking friends here. The meats in the fry pan are
peameal bacon, pork sausage, and venison sausage. They were down to 4
eggs so breakfast was on the light side of eggs. Note the cast iron fry
pan DH. After years of refusing to use mine and finally using this one,
the only fry pan in the place, DH is officially converted!

The only other pic of food he took was of their healthy cheese, cracker,
and venison sausage tray. He forgot to take a pic of the squab dinner.
Apparently it was quite good. They had a couple of dinners of fresh
caught fish, the pics of the guys holding their catch were quite good.
Surprisingly they did eat rather healthy meals the majority of the time.
One wife sent venison chili, another enough salad fixings for several
salads, I sent lasagne and a veggie tray.

Nice pic of the meat, but, gosh, where are the eggs???? LOL. Sorry, I'm
used to my hubby who will eat 5 fried eggs and ask for 3 more. He's my
piggy. :~)

What is peameal bacon?


Peameal bacon is sweet cured pork loin originally rolled in peameal
hence the name. The coating is now more commonly corn meal. I posted
links to pics of my first peameal bacon experiment using pork
tenderloin. I used the tenderloin because it was really, really cheap
and it was my first attempt at curing meat. I will be posting a pick of
homemade peameal bacon shortly. I started the curing process last
Saturday so it is pretty much ready to use except I haven't put the
cornmeal coating on it yet.

My Hubby is green with envy. That would be his dream trip. Hunting, fishing
and eating meat with everything!

Wow.. isn't tht plate one from the Dominion Stores that had them on their
weekly deals many many years ago? The 2nd colour was blue I think? My
mother had a set of 12.

Sorry Debbie, I can't help you with where the plate came from. If the
owners of the cabin, friends of ours, are anything like us dinnerware
from the house went to the trailer when we finially replaced it. So the
trailer dinnerware ended up being a mish mash of mixed patterns until I
splurged and bought a matching set. Matching dinnerware isn't a high
priority for recreational living

Actually there is American Canadian bacon and there is peameal bacon.
Two different things. They differ in texture. Canadian bacon is more
like thin sliced ham like texture with no peameal coating and usually
round. Peameal is thicker slices, the texture is grainer, and the

'twas me Wayne. Oh yes, peameal bacon is a wonderful treat It is
definitely worth the trip to Canada and be sure to get some real maple
syrup and poutine as well! We've travelled a fair amount in the US and
have always been dismayed when we order Canadian bacon forgetting it is
that thin ham-like stuff. We don't eat peameal bacon just for breakfast
either. Peameal bacon is great for a quick dinner meat and makes
awesome sandwiches.

Although we have lived in Arizona since 2000, I spent most of my life in NE
Ohio. We travelled at least once a year (at least 40 trips) to Canada for
amazing trips that hold fond memories. When I was in junior highschool
while on a field trip to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan, I met and made
friends with a boy my age who was visiting there from Owen Sound. We
became penpals and remained friends for many years. Alternating summers
through the end of highschool, we spent a two week vacation to each other's
homes. I'm also very fond of the food in Canada and can never praise it
enough. The best poutine I've ever eaten was in a little restaurant in
Ottawa. They told me the gravy was made with veal stock, veal/beef bones,
leeks, and garlic. The cheese they used was Roquefort. Maybe it was a bit
over the top, but delicious nonetheless. We always brought back peameal
bacon and maple syrup to Ohio, and since we moved to Arizona I have had
peameal bacon shipped to me from Canada a few times and it's always a great
treat. I know that it can make a great dinner meal, but since I don't get
it often now, I'm more miserly with it and slice and fry it for breakfast
or for brunch. I never buy American Canadian Bacon, but will eat it if I
order eggs benedict in a good restaurant.
