Default OT - T-Shirt Profits - Katrina Relief?

Are we still doing t-shirts? I know our contributions wouldn't be
immediate, but people will need help for months and years to come. Maybe
we can help a little.

As of now, they're not accepting clothing or food donations. No place
to keep them.
Just money.
Maybe later.

Were you replying to Damsel? I think she's suggesting that money from
the sale of rfc logo whatevers be directed towards relief needed because
of Katrina.

I believe that Carol meant the profits from selling tee-shirts, not
the shirts themselves. It says "profits" in the subject line. It
would be the same as we did with the RFC Cook Books for 9/11 help.
It's a good idea and I thank Carol for thinking of it.

I meant sending them the profits from the shirt sales.

Sounds like a great idea, but what happened with the rfc t-shirt
proposal?

I think it was killed by 'Design by Committee' ... first it was
tshirts, then it was aprons, then does the logo have the date,
no date ... whatever. I think the idea just choked on itself.

I'm thinking it's better to just donate the price we would have
paid to get a tshirt directly to (your charity here), anyone know
what I'm trying to get across? Sorry, I'm running out the door
and don't have time to be clearer.

I have to agree with Nancy on this one. It's a nice idea to donate the
profits from selling the t-shirts but...why go through all the trouble of
designing a t-shirt, apron, what-have-you, then having people process
orders, spend money on postage, whatever, just to donate $2 per shirt to the
hurricane relief? That way it's more about the shirt than the donation.

If you are so inclined, run down to your local Red Cross chapter (or other
organization that is helping out) and give them a check for however much you
can.

Here in CT, the local armories are collection points for money and supplies.
(I believe they are National Guard armories, not sure about that...Ed? can
you fill in here?)

The radio stations are championing the causes and doing live broadcasts from
the various locations. They are taking donations of money, bottled water
and non-perishable ready-to-eat edibles (Juice boxes, peanut butter
crackers, fruit roll ups, granola bars, snack packs of canned fruit, gelatin
snacks, pudding cups that are shelf-stable, stuff like that) and they said
they desperately need batteries, packages of new socks and underwear. Also,
baby formula and diapers. In fact, yesterday, on the radio, I heard the guy
say "Stop bringing baby formula for the time being, what we really need is
baby BOTTLES!"

Last night at a minor league baseball game, they had a big jug outside and
people were dropping money in. They also had a game where you buy tennis
balls for $1 and toss them on the field after the game to try to win prizes.
They sold out of balls (there are 2000 balls for this game). I'm sure they
raised over $3000 last night. It's not much compared to what they need, but
when you consider it was only about 2500 people there last night....not bad.

My company (a family run business with about 50 employees) is making a
collection Tuesday from among the employees and the owner is matching our
donation dollar for dollar with company funds. So while I dropped a small
amount of money in the bucket last night, I plan to make my main donation at
work, because whatever I donate will be matched...maximize the effort. One
of our major clients is based in New Orleans.

Thanks, Sheryl, you said what I was trying to say. (smile) Sorry, I
just blurted and ran.

Any reason why we can't do both? I think a lot of us would still like to
have a shirt, donations or not. Separate donations specifically for the
Katrina victims would probably be larger anyway.

I have no problem with that whatsoever. I'm in. It just seems a difficult
way to drum up money for donations right now. People said they didn't
want to pay more than $10 for a tshirt, so that would, after all is said and
done, at the end of the day, don'tcha know, it's only a few bucks to donate
per tshirt. If someone wants to do the work, I'm all for it.

I'll just make my own donations and we could have a collective rfc donation
with the tshirts.

You can sometimes "dedicate" your donation on some sites (in memory of
Mom, John and Jane's 50th anniversary, whatever). If folks include
that in their donations dedicated to RFC or rec.food.cooking, it could
be seen as a positive thing.

That's a great piece of information, Maxine. It really would simplify making
a "collective" donation as a group.
