Pickle juice and kraut juice has been used by professional athletes to defer
the onslaught of high heat/humidity in games.

When Nolan Ryan came up with the Mets he tended to get blisters on his
throwing hand. He used to soak his hand in pickle or kraut juice
(pickle juice, if I remember right) to toughen it. I guess it must
have worked...
