Default Off to Kansas City

Okay, I booked a trip - one of those "last minute deals" actually to
Overland Park, Kansas. Which is to say, might as well be Kansas City,
Missouri. Got a pretty good deal; direct flight and 5 nights at the
Radisson in Overland Park. Travelocity keeps talking about BBQ as shown
below:

Load up on lip-smackin spicy hot BBQ in one of KCs 90 barbecue restaurants,
then chill out while admiring jazz legends and lore at the American Jazz
Museum.

Kansas City, home to dry-rub BBQ, is bursting with barbecue. Subtle and
sweet, tangy and hot, there's a strain of sauce for every finger-lickin'
palate. While early pioneers may have moved westward from Kansas City, you
can blaze a BBQ trail from one smoky spot to the next without ever leaving
town. Start bare bones at Arthur Bryant's, a legendary BBQ joint serving up
sandwiches on old-fashioned white bread that quickly turns pink
from the cayenne and paprika-spiked sauce. Next, taste test the green
hickory-smoked Grade A meats of Winslow City Market were they employ a
specially engineered brick pit. After a fiery feast, cool down with some
smooth jazz in the city where Count Basie, Charlie "Bird" Parker and others
did some of their own
best cookin'. Strut down to the American Jazz Museum for exhibits, a studio
replica, and evenings of live jazz. Search keywords: Family, Foodie

KC Masterpiece

4747 Wyandotte
Across from Halls on the Country Culb Plaza
Kansas City, KS
816.531.7111"

This meat Mecca is home to one of the best brisket sandwiches you will ever
put between your lips. Sample the pulled pork, barbecued meats and crispy
onion strings of this famous sauce-making factory. Post-meat consumption,
claw a sticky bun and follow with a hot towel.

Winslow's City Market BBQ

20 East 5th Street
In The City Market
Kansas City, MO 64106
816.471.RIBS"

Serving a mouth-watering blend of smoked meats and home-style sides,
Winslow's has been a Kansas City tradition for over 25 years. For an
unmatched flavor, they smoke only the finest quality meats over green
hickory in a specially engineered brick pit. Winslow's dry-rub barbecue
delivers a characteristic pink smoke ring along the edges of briskets and
ribs. All sandwiches and meals are served without sauce, permitting
customers to add their own selection of sauces--which are available for
purchase, of course.

Arthur Bryant's

1727 Brooklyn Avenue
Kansas City, MO 64127
816.231.1123"

This simple BBQ joint may not win any interior design contests but that
doesnt matter, cause the food is what counts: straight, simple and spicy.
Pork, beef, chicken, turkey, ham and sausage are doused with sauce and
slapped on two slices of Wonder Bread. Anyone who walks out without needing
a wet nap deserves a prize.

American Jazz Museum

1616 E. 18th Street
Kansas City, MO 64108
816.474.8463"

Come pay tribute to the jazz greats at this 18th & Vine
institution honoring the likes of Louis Armstrong , Duke
Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Kansas City native Charlie
Parker. In the museum's studio replica, you can move among five listening
stations, each corresponding with the sections of a jazz band. At Jazz
Central, visitors listen to recordings spanning music history from the
inception of the genre through its present incarnation. In the Wee-Bop Room,
children under eight cultivate their interest in the art through creative,
hands-on activities. Most versatile is the Blue Room, which is part of the
exhibition space by day and transforms into a smoke-free jazz club on
Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Admission to the museum
costs $6. Admission to the Blue Room is free on Mondays and Thursdays and $5
on Fridays
and Saturdays.

Gonna be an interesting trip!

Jill
