This is mostly for those in Chicago or from Chicago -
It's well-known that Chicago and New York have different traditions for eating hot dogs. I'm familiar with the NY tradition, but what's the Chicago tradition? That is, what do Chicagoans put on their hot dogs, apart from the usual catsup and mustard, that is. |

The chicago-style relish is pretty close to "normal" relish, but is a much brighter shade of green, and seems a bit sweeter. I think it has a bit of mustard in it, but I'm not sure. I've never seen it outside of Illinois or the adjacent states (although I've seen Vienna-brand chicago relish as far away as Houghton, MI and Detroit, MI). A sport pepper is the name of small pickled peppers, usually around 1/2" diameter by 1 1/2" long. Depending on the supplier, the exact species varies, but is usually Caspicum Annum or Tabasco peppers. I started growing my own since you can't buy proper "sport peppers" in New Hampshire. I tend to buy some when I'm on one of my frequent business trips. There's a local supply house that has a pot of simmering hot dogs in the break room all day, every day, for customers waiting on their orders to be pulled and loaded. Guess what? Ketchup, pickle relish, and chopped onions. Nothing else (well, buns of course). Never heard anyone complain, and that pot gets refilled several times a day. BOB |

And, here on the left coast, many places have a salsa cruda (diced onions/tomato/garlic, cilantro, lime juice) to put on a dog.
