heat from cooking will kill the germs . . . and dissolve the grit. Um, heat is not a solvent, it's an accelerator. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

Personally, with any luck, I like to think any pesticides used on other vegetables will rinse off, too. Ditto for any little critters living in the leaves. nancy |

Otherwise, I just rinse and dry. Leafy vegatables and broccoli I soak for a few minutes in tepid salted water. It usually drives the critters out. Wayne |

Ever turned over a cabbage leave after peering at a suspicious hole only to find some sort of worm/larvae burrowed its way inside? What about the grit in leeks and sometimes fresh spinach? Gotta wash those suckers off! Jill |

Jill Oh, just dissolve that grit with a blowtorch. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |

Gotta wash those suckers off! Rachel Ray (no, I am NOT picking on her) is convinced that heads of romaine are washed. Hello, how would they do that, how would they get the water/whatever down to the roots. She also just wiped celery stalks, come on, just rinse it off, take you two seconds. I'm fine with the double/triple washed loose leaf stuff. nancy |

Hello, how would they do that, how would they get the water/whatever down to the roots. She also just wiped celery stalks, come on, just rinse it off, take you two seconds. I'm fine with the double/triple washed loose leaf stuff. Each evening I go out to my garden with a five gallon contractors bucket filled with cold water. I toss my harvest into the bucket and swish it around to wash out the bulk of the sand. I toss that water out on the ground (don't want to put all that sand into my septic. When I get the veggies into the house I soak them in a sinkful of cold water to remove the remainder of the sand. Romain lettuce accumulates a lot of sand near the root end but by swishing in water most all of it is washed out. I think leafy veggies can be washed through ten changes of water and still more sand will come out... I don't think eating a few bits of grit does any harm, we eat a bushel of dirt in a lifetime. And the salt in the salad dressing takes care of those few baby slugs that escape inspection... anyway, live critters signify a good crop and no pestasides. ---= BOYCOTT FRENCH--GERMAN (belgium) =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- Sheldon ```````````` "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." |
