Default Taking a Break

Naw, I'm not having my semi-annual hissy-fit ahead of schedule.

Crash has suffered a very serious injury, and we don't really have any idea
what's going to be happening for awhile. I'm not going to be reading RFC
for an unknown duration, but if you want to keep in touch, I can probably
handle e-mail. RFC just has way too much traffic right now.

See ya when I see ya,

I'll explain a little more, since she can't. Crash tripped a month or so
back and his hip was injured. Well, to make a long story short, subsequent
visits to the doctor proved nothing until extreme pain forced Crash and
Carol to go to the emergency room last night. The bone in his hip is dying.

He's in severe pain and Carol's office has to be converted to a "hospital"
room so he's within easy reach of necessities. A hip replacement has been
suggested, but that's a last resort.

Anyone can email her; she's set up her computer on the dining room table.
So far, the July cook-in is still on, so..........

Hope everyone else is in good health and good spirits. Spring is here!

Oh no, what awful news! Here's wishing Crash some immediate comfort and
a full recovery. Wish I could send an e-casserole.

Sounds like aseptic necrosis of the femoral head. No one's friend, for sure.

for sure.

I have insomnia, so I went back through Google to see if anyone had
commented on my post. It's been busier here than I thought it might
be!

It's avascular necrosis (restricted blow flow through the bones,
causing bone death). It's in the femoral head and in the hip where it
meets the femor. We had an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon
today, but he got called away for an emergency surgery, so we won't
know what the plan of action is until we see him on Tuesday.

It sounds as though Crash may have had minor breaks in both hips some
time in the past. Fortunately, he tripped over the dog, causing him to
seek treatment for the pain on one side, and it was diagnosed in the
early stages (didn't show up on x-ray, but the MRI caught it). We're
hoping that the prognosis won't be too negative. I am expecting bone
grafts, but I could be wrong. It's hard to know for sure when all you
have is limited information gleaned from the internet.

In the meantime, he's on some serious pain meds. He's using fentanyl
patches and oxycodone. He's disoriented, has slurred speech, isn't
eating, and obviously sleeps a lot. He's supposed to walk with
crutches, but he's lucky if he can shuffle his feet from one place to
another. I wish we had a wheelchair.

That's about it for now. I'll try to post another update when we know
what's going to happen. I think he's in for a very long recovery,
assuming that he does recover from this. Scary shit.

Oh, and he won't let me cancel the cook-in, so that's still on, as
Christy mentioned.

Thanks for everyone's kind thoughts,
Carol

Damn, Carol. No wonder he has slurred speech, etc. Oxycodone made me
sick as the proverbial dog. Not to mention combined with the fent.
Although, the side effects are marginal compared to the relief it must
give him given the current situation. Just a word of advice from my
wife - don't have too thin a skin and take anything he says too
seriously. He may say some really mean or silly stuff, what with the
combined effect of the pain and the meds. I'm being quite serious
here, Carol. If my wife had taken me too seriously in a similar
situation a few years ago, we'd be divorced now. I wish Crash all the
best, and particularly YOU, my friend. The caregiver can sometimes
wear out before the patient - pace yourself.

yep, much harder on caregiver than on patient. Just ask my wife.

Don't know where you are in Minnesota, but you might consider the Mayo
Clinic here in Rochester if any heavy duty procedures are in order.

Hey Gator! Kili sent me a copy of your note. Guess I'd better keep
Googling this thread. It's so good to know that people care.

Crash says some really off the wall things that have nothing to do with
anything. But he's never said one unkind word. At least at this
point. I've dealt with an ex-husband who got pretty deranged after
heart bypass surgery and a stroke. He'd angrily accuse me of saying
things I'd never said, etc. So I do understand that the brain develops
a mind of its own when subjected to certain drugs, etc.

The biggest problem so far happened the day after he put on his first
patch. While smoking a cigarette, he set fire to his pants, and didn't
notice until they'd been burning for awhile. Thankfully, they are
loose, and he didn't get burned. But it's scary. I try to sit with
him when he's both loopy and smoking now.

As far as pacing myself, I'm trying to do that. I take naps whenever I
can get them in. When he's up, or I can't sleep, I frolic in the
American Idol newsgroup (a lot fewer posts than RFC). I'm having a
great time telling people that they're idiots. EG

Take care,
Carol

He has many previous injuries, so he's needed a lot of my help for some
time now. The only thing different this time is the magnitude of the
pain and the fear associated with knowing what's wrong, but not what's
going to happen.

We're not that far, actually. Our clinic/hospital are part of the Mayo
conglomerate. I hope that this can be taken care of here, but we've
always been referred to the Big M for serious stuff. I don't know my
way around Rochester (Crash does), and I'm not too crazy about all the
construction. A trip to Roch is a good opportunity to have a chicken
dinner at the Ranch, though. I expressed my travel concerns with
Crash's internal medicine guy, and he said we may have an option in
Iowa, as well. Not sure if it's part of Mayo or not. I'm guessing
that it probably is.

Carol, dear, I'm extremely serious here. He may say some thing s that
will absolutely set you on fire with anger - I must plead with you -
please don't take anything personally - my wife told me a few days ago
that if she really wanted a divorce all she had to do was play back
recordings of the crap I said while under the influence. And please
realize that you can't fix everything, you know? Just be sure to
spend as much time taking care of yourself as you do Crash -
seriously, Hon, my wife has been through this - If you don't look out
for number one, everybody suffers. If you don't mind I'll be saying
some serious prayers for you and Crash. God bless him, I've been
through stuff where the pain was so bad, all I wanted to do was but a
bullet in my head. I pray for you, Carol - I really will, I promise.

The construction isn't bad. And if you need help navigating just let me
know. Email me, with the obvious editing of the address. The Ranch? I've
driven by there thousands of times, and never eaten there. Is it good?
