Default My Review of Olive Oils

I have long been a connoisseur of Olive Oil. Over the past couple of
years I've compiled a review of those I have tried. The local stores
where I bought them won't mean much to most people, but most of the
brands are pretty widely available. Enjoy!

Olive Oil Notes

Olive Oils Rankings, in order from best to worst, according to me.
List started 1/6/03 Mon.

Sevillano Fall Harvest (excellent flavor, not buttery, complex and
reminiscent of artichokes) $34/quart from
http://www.sciabica.com/character.html. From California. I had to
pay $10 shipping for this and the Manzanillo product below. This
works out to a whopping $47/quart including shipping! (spreading $10
cost over two items -- [$18.50/12.7 * 32]). But these are the best
olive oils I've ever had.
Manzanillo Fall Harvest (intense olive oil flavor; can really taste
the olives) $25/quart purchased from
http://www.sciabica.com/character.html. From California. I had to
pay $10 shipping for this and the Sevillano product below. This works
out to $38/quart when you include shipping! (spreading the $10 cost
over two items -- [$15/12.7 * 32]
Pompeii - Spanish Olive Oil (long lasting, fruity flavor)
Bellino Extra Virgin $21.29 qt @ Costas, but only $8.64 qt @ Shop
Right CH. Product of Italy -- (deep olive flavor, burns slightly)
Spectrum Naturals CA $25.73/qt @ Shop Right. A California Olive Oil!
Light in color, buttery, smooth, fruity, olive oil flavor).
Caroli Extra Virgin $19/qt @ Croce in Cherry Hill (Deep flavor, a bit
sour, burns a bit going down)
San Giuliano Alghero Extra Virgin $11/litre @ Product of Sardinia,
Italy Croce on 70 (buttery, bitter and a bit sour, but with fairly
deep flavor, burns a bit going down)
Colavita Extra Virgin $12.23/qt @ Shop Right CH (deep olive flavor,
burn slightly, as good as Bellino Extra Virgin at a lower cost)
Madre de Sicilia $15/qt @ Croce on 70 (buttery, but fairly deep
flavor)
Villa Cesarea Sicilian Olive Oil $13/Litre ($11.44/qt) @ Croce
Italian Store on Rt 70 (light olive oil flavor, a bit buttery)
Rienzi Extra Virgin (stronger and less buttery then Fillippo)
$7.14/quart
Athena Kolymvari Greek Olive Oil $7.52/quart purchased from Shop
Right CH on 7/11/03 Fri. Nice olive oil flavor. Not buttery, but a
bit bitter
Cento Extra Virgin$7.51/qt Buttery, smooth, weak olive oil flavor,
Italy
Carapelli Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil ($11.28/qt. Expensive. Kind
of burns going down. Fairly good olive oil flavor, a bit buttery, but
less buttery than Fillippo)
Lio Extra Virgin $7.51 per quart. Buttery, smooth, not much olive oil
flavor, but more olive oil flavor than Filippo.
Spectrum Naturals Tuscan $13.59/500 ml ($25.73 qt) at Shop Right CH.
Expensive, Buttery, lacking olive oil flavor, poor value.
Filippo Berio Extra Virgin -- buttery and smooth. Lacking in olive
oil flavor.
Lucini Extra Virgin $20.69/qt @ Shop Right. Expensive, burns going
down, a funny, sour, unprecedented flavor, the worst, most caustic
olive oil.
Returned it to Shop Right.
