Default Senior grocery discounts?

A blurb in the April 2013 AARP Bulletin:

"Many supermarkets offer discounts - typically 5 to 10 percent off
your grocery tab - for customers 55-plus who shop on a specific day of
the week, often Tuesday or Wednesday. Promotions vary, so ask ahead.
Participating chains include Albertson's, Bashas', HI-LO, Food Lion,
Fred Meyer, Fry's, Hy-Vee, Kroger, Meijer, Pathmark, Piggly Wiggly and
Publix."

Never heard of that before. (None of those stores are around here (MA/
NH border), and none of the stores that *are* around here have a
senior discount. (I think, but I'll ask next time!) )

Do any of you geezers get a senior discount where you shop?

My regular grocery store, "Farm Fresh" offers a 5% discount for people over
55 every Tuesday and Thursday. Whenever I'm there on those days I usually
have to remind them to give me the discount. Sadly though, I rarely shop on
those days. Most weeks for me it's a Saturday morning thing. I've got a
nice list for tomorrow morning already, btw.

Never thought to ask! We do take advantage of Sr. Discount Day at the
movie theater... which is on Monday at our favorite theater.

Here's another list for you that was compiled in 2012

I asked a clerk in one of our local clothing stores about a "Seniors Account"...
He laughed and laughed...and said he had never heard of such a thing.

I get the "grey hair" discount. Shopping on a Tuesday last year at a
local chain, when the cashier said the total I didn't hear him quite
right, and gave him a questioning look. He immediately gave me a
discount.

Judging by the size of the shopping baskets that I've seen many seniors take
to the checkout, a discount will not make much difference to their tab.
It's the young families who are struggling to get by that need the help.

Ross gives a Sr. discount on Tuesdays
http://www.rossstores.com/cu_faq.aspx
and you saw Banana Republic on the other list - so both ends of the
money spectrum are covered. We have also put our (USA) Senior Pass to
national parks to very good use.

-more senior grocery discount information as of 2011 (USA)
<http://seniorliving.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=seniorliving&cdn=people&tm=19&f=00&su =p284.13.342.ip_p531.60.342.ip_&tt=2&bt=7&bts=3&zu =http%3A//seniordiscounts.com/>

I see there are various discounts offered to seniors in Australia as
well as Canada and the UK. All you need to do is ask Google if you're
interested.

Around here there is a tendency to package stuff in amounts too large to
use at one meal, hence a negative discount for geezers!

We received a senior discount on our auto insurance. $ 1.60. We're
thinking they didn't want us to get too excited in our condition. Polly

Never have I run into this. Actually, the seniors around here are far
better off than the struggling 20 and 30 year olders with kids,
mortgage etc.

There is a dept store which offered 15% off on Mondays to 50 and over
- but then the under 50 folks squawked and they started a Tuesday
club for them. Now they just offer an overall discount so no one can
yell discrimination. It's one more card to carry, but they can also
just punch in yer phone number and if you've signed up, you get the
discount.

I'm sick of all these frequent user clubs etc - just give everyone a
price break and be done with it.

Kroger gives straight 10% off any time to seasoned citizens with the magic mark of the beast card. They also have a killer gas discount program. They also have the best pharmacy in town. Makes Walgreen's look like the idiots they are. Extra gas points for prescriptions. They also have beer wine smokes and snuff. What more could a person need?

I've never heard of it either. I have not seen anything posted at Fred
Meyer or Albertsons. Some places give a military discount. I think Rite
Aid does a senior discount on one day of the week. I know of a local
nursery that gives a senior discount and also a cash discount.

I am registered with Albertsons. Lemme go to their website and see...
Hmmm... Does not say anything there. Lemme Swagbuck it. This is very old
info but it looks like in Carlsbad CA, on the first Wed. of the month, there
is a 10% senior discount.

http://thecarlsbaddispatch.com/view_...332&forum_id=1

I just called my mom who is a senior. She didn't remember at first but then
said that Fred Meyer does do one but it's only on one day of the week and
she never asked for it. Does not know about an Alberstons one.

Part of the problem there is that some seniors just don't have the money to
buy much. And yet they are not low income enough to qualify for any
assistance. Also some seniors get confused by things like coupons so don't
bother to even try to use them. Then again to those same people a senior
discount might confuse them as well. Or they may forget to ask for it. A
restaurant that we dine at used to give a senior discount automatically.
Which is odd to me because they already have a discounted senior menu. But
if you have a senior dining with you, they will discount the entire table.
But then they stopped doing it. When my SIL asked why, she was told that
you need to ask for it. But the senior I dine with always forgets to ask
for it.

George qualifies for the senior rate at Kroger, they take 10% off, but
it is not good on liquor, beer, cigarettes or prescription drugs. At our
store, it is good every day, but that may not be true in every state, or
in every store.

It's funny how these different establishments define "senior". I was
old enough to join AARP at 50. Now I have to wait until 55 or even 60 to
get these discounts?

I've never heard of a 55+ here being considered as a senior when it
comes to discounts at stores. I asked once, and was told it's 60 and
up.

Even worse, we have to wait until 65 to draw full social security.

Denny's considers 55 to be a senior.

I'll never forget the first time my mom was offered a senior discount. It
wasn't there but another place. My coworker's son was working there. My
mom got all bent out of shape about it. Turns out that she was beyond the
age of getting the discount but she was still bent out of shape. And
wouldn't you know that my coworker's son was the one that offered the
discount. I felt bad for him. You don't want to tangle with my mom.

The $ 1.60 is the awful truth. I carefully filed the insurance statement
away with our important papers. Wouldn't want to lose that one. Polly

Absolutely.
McDonalds has any size coffee for $1. I'd get a small no matter what
the price, but I can get a senior coffee for 79¢, so why not keep the
21¢ in my pocket?

You must be older than me. After a birth date of 1937 is it climbing
steadily. 1943 to 1954 group had to wait to 66. Born 1960 or later
it is 67.

I was with a credit card company once that got busted for purposely
processing mailed payments late just so they could charge you a late penalty
and even a higher interest rate if it happened twice in one year.

They did that to me and in the next year I ended up oweing (sp?) several
hundred dollars extra due to penalties and eventual higher interest rate.

Then they got caught and I got a class action lawsuit notice.
The lawyers won the class action lawsuit. They got most of the money and the
actual people that got ripped off got a rock.

I was overcharged several hundred dollars for what they illegally did. My
settlement payment was a check for $0.68 cents. I kid you not. ;0

Ooops. Maybe it's Medicare then. I dunno. Don't draw, don't care
when I qualify. Not a taker.

LOL! While it may be the god's honest truth, you did it again and
made me laugh out loud... you're the only one who can do that so
consistently.

I was born in 1953.

I can retire at 62 but the monthly payment would be a joke.
My full retirement is age 66.
Ultimate SS retirement for me is age 70.
At that age I'll get the maximum per month and no penalty for working.

I'm 3 months away from turning age 60.
I still feel young (somewhat). Still feel good and I actually seem to be in
better shape than many younger guys I work with. ??? I plan to work until
age 70, at least.

You never know though.... my health could go all to hell in the next 10
years. Hopefully not.

Which goes to show how many people had been ripped off and joined the
suit. I hope someone went to jail, but it's just usually wishful
thinking when it comes to robbery like that. If they were less bullet
proof, we'd be seeing those Wall Street criminals in jail by this
time.

I have a Kroger card, and that does provide a discount--but only for Kroger
brand products or items that are on their targeted list. In my case, this
sometimes means only a few cents but will be several dollars on other
occasions. I also use the card for gasoline (10 cents reduction per gallon
for every $100 spent in the store).

It's arbitrary, each business can choose an age that best attracts the
group with the most disposable income.

I called the Publix where I shop and the woman in customer service said,
"Senior discounts? No ma'am."

If you wait too long you may collect nothing, or very little.
Mathematically it works out that most people collect substantially
more SS when they retire at the earliest age that they can collect. If
you're still in debt SS will never get you out of debt. The thing is
SS was never meant to be a pension, you can't live on SS alone, if
that's your only income/asset you'll need to avail yourself of every
government handout possible and you still won't live much better than
in a box under a bridge. I retired early, at age 60, I've been able
to do a lot more than most people I know who worked till 65 and older,
and retiring younger means less stress so one's health deteriorates
less. I'll be 70 next month, most everyone my age I knew at age 60 is
gone and of the few who are still alive most are seriously infirm/in
nursing homes. My advice to anyone who plans on retirement is to
retire as soon as possible... I've seen people's health deteriorate
very rapidly, one day they are fine, a month later a funeral. And
then there are those who are ascared of retirement, they die on the
job... they plan to retire, some day.. they are very
irrational/unrealistic. During the past five years several of the
people my age I knew had to battle cancer, none won. Remember, no one
gets out alive.
