It has to do with the sense of smell: Smell memories are generally very
strong, and smells from childhood naturally bring back childhood memories.
Marcel Proust's _Remembrance of Things Past_ is a huge book filled with
memories which are all brought back by the taste of a madeliene.

LOL... not the country where *I* am! (and my teeth would not appreciate the
filing, anyway.) But it was "enchilada night" here, so all is well.

Reading through this thread, it strikes me that comfort food is better
suited to winter than summer. That's when I'm likely to make Swiss steak,
meatloaf, or even tuna casserole. It's much less appealing to me in the
summertime, when I try to keep meals as light as possible.

I've always thought that myself. I don't find it anywhere near as easy
to come up with comfort foods for hot weather.

Agreed.

As much as I love summer foods, like all the fresh vegetables and
fruits, and it's nice to grill dinner outside, etc., when I think of comfort
foods it's like soup and stew and other stuff that really doesn't
appeal to me when it's hot out. Even having the A/C on doesn't
fix that. Of course, if I lived in a hot climate like you do, I'd have to
adjust.
