For the past several years my husband and I have held a Super Bowl party. Well, back in 1992 I read in a newspaper article about a couple that was serving team-inspired snacks at their party. That year the Buffalo Bills were playing the Washington Redskins, and this couple was serving buffalo wings and potato skins as snacks. I thought this was a good idea, and did the same. Ever since then, I've served hot appetizers at our party that were themed to the two teams. This has somehow become kind of a big deal, so every year since then I've been worried about what I'd do if certain teams made it all the way to the Big Game. So I'm putting it up for suggestions. What I want is ideas for hot appetizers that are somehow connected to the city or mascot of the NFL teams. In addition, they need to be items that can be made ahead (or, ideally, purchased all made) so they just need to be heated before serving. (We normally get 30+ people at the party, a good number of whom stand in my kitchen, drinking beer and getting in the way.) They also need to be finger foods. As I trip my way down the stairs that lead from my kitchen to the family room I'm not in any position to deal with forks or cups and spoons or whatever. Suggestions for any team are greatly appreciated (and I've included below what I've done in the past or would do for various teams), but I particularly need ideas for the following teams: Cleveland Browns Seattle Seahawks Detroit Lions Indianapolis Colts Many, many thanks! Anny Here are my prior year snacks and ideas: Baltimore Ravens Something with crab. Made these toasted bread cubes filled with creamy crab stuff, but they were too much work for how they tasted. Ideas needed. Buffalo Bills Buffalo wings Cincinnati Bengals ??? Something with Cincinnati chili, maybe - little biscuit cups filled with chili? Ideas needed. Cleveland Browns ???? Denver Broncos Min quiches with Denver-omelet style filling. Other ideas appreciated. Houston Texans Something Tex-Mex. Indianapolis Colts ????? Jacksonville Jaguars Something Floridian ???? Kansas City Chiefs Something BBQ - maybe BBQ chicken wings Miami Dolphins Something Floridian? New England Patriots Made these sorta weird things - small squares of toasted whole wheat bread topped with smashed Boston Baked Beans and liberal amounts of chopped cooked bacon. Only thing I could come up with. Somewhat surprisingly, people liked them. Other ideas greatly appreciated. New York Jets Something New York-y. Maybe meatballs in apple jelly-vased sauce, in honor of the Big Apple Oakland Raiders Last year did cheese-stuffed breadsticks with marinara dipping sauce that I bought, on the basis that there are a lot of Italians in the Bay area. People rolled their eyes at this explanation. Ideas needed. Pittsburgh Steelers Made mini Pitts-burgers. Everyone loved them, especially the kids. San Diego Chargers Something Mexican. I think I did frozen taquitos. Tennessee Titans Something BBQ. I did mini BBQ sandwiches in 2000. Arizona Cardinals Something Mexican. Atlanta Falcons I did Southern-fried chicken wings (frozen). Carolina Panthers ???? Something BBQ? Chicago Bears We should be so lucky as have the un-Bear-ables in the SB. I'd probably do pizza bites. Dallas Cowboys Something Tex Mex. I think I did Cowboy Cups - mini biscuit crust with barbeque sauced ground beef. Detroit Lions ???? Green Bay Packers Fried cheese sticks - frozen. Minnesota Vikings Swedish meatballs New Orleans Saints Something Cajun. New York Giants I did mini Coney Island hotdogs in 2001 Philadelphia Eagles Mini Philly steak sandwiches San Francisco 49ers I did these English Muffin/crab/cheese things, cut in small wedges. They were good, but connection to SF was somewhat iffy. Seattle Seahawks ???? St. Louis Rams Toasted ravioli. I had to explain to most guests that these are a local specialty in St. Louis. Tampa Bay Buccaneers I did chicken wings with an orange mustard sauce last year. Other ideas needed. Washington Redskins Potato skins |

for pittsburgh's steelers--go with pierogies.
And Kielbasa. If you're serving a dessert at a Pittsburgh party, how about the Klondike ice cream bar, or Clark and Zagnut candy bars? One thing you can always do regardless of who's playing is make cupcakes and get tubes of colored icing for the colors of the teams and paint them up in the team colors. Seattle Seahawks Something salmon-related would probably work well for a Seattle party. Think seafood. Detroit Lions Coney Island hot dogs, which you can get nearly anywhere in Detroit, would make an interesting appetizer. I suppose you could make them and cut them into quarters (bite sized pieces). Very easy to make: fix the hot dogs and buns, and top with some drained browned ground beef, then some cooked Hormel chili without beans. Onions, mustard and a slice of american cheese (between the hot dog and bun) optional. I'd fix them up and cut them into at least quarters. You might be able to make an appetizer out of this as a variation on the "pigs in a blanket" appetizer where you put some browned ground meat and chili and onion into your pastry blanket and cook it with the hot dog, and serve with a cheese sauce for dipping. Oakland is well known for BBQ; stay with teh Raider image and serve cheap

I've been a Steelers fan since the late 50's. Gotta just hang with 'em man. As for the apps from a Steelers prespective: pierogies, kielbasa and saurkraut sandwiches, fish sandwiches, if you can find "chipped" ham anywhere for sandwiches. And for the kids, ya gotta have floats. Vanilla icecream in a tall glass with pop (what you probably call soda) poured (carefully) over the ice cream - straw and spoon required. |

As someone else mentioned, clam chowder. Indian pudding for dessert if you're ambitious. Or Boston cream pie. For New York Giants or Jets, pizza. Joanie |

Maybe go in the other direction, think of snack foods, and decide for whom they can be symbolic. It's certainly a challange. :-) |
