I posted here last month that we were having an heirloom turkey for
Thanksgiving. It didn't work out, unfortunately. We did have a free
range bird, which D brined using Stephan Pyles' recipe. It was
delicious, of course, but I really wanted to try the antique gobbler.

Thanksgiving dinner for us was held at a friend's place in Petaluma,
CA. I'd never been to California before. Woody Guthrie said it's a
garden of Eden. He was right. I walked the neighborhood Thanksgiving
morning and picked enough figs to grill for the evening's dinner, for
example.

Friday, D and I drove to Point Reyes seashore and walked the cold
windy beach till it started to rain. I'd never seen the Pacific Ocean
before. As the joke goes, I've still still seen only the top of it.
Later we stopped at a restaurant in Point Reyes Station where I had
Hog Island Oysters on the half shell. Amazing! Even though I love
Gulf Oysters, I do believe the Pacific ones were the best I've ever
tasted. They went a long way towards making up for a truly silly
Marin County "artist" who sat next to us at the bar while we waited
for our table. What a squirrel. He wanted to sell his house,
apparently --described it to his friends as being like a barn or a
hunting lodge or a cathedral -- said it was only a matter of fifty or
a hundred thousand between his price and the buyer -- said other
stupid shit betraying a vacuous, money-soaked egomania. Loved the
oysters, though.

I got to fly first class both ways, which was a treat. D was already
there when I left, but she flew back with me. I was in first class
and she was in coach. Did you ever see that episode of Sienfeld?

Speaking of Petaluma, we recently discovered an excellent India Pale
Ale called Lagunitas, which is made in Petaluma. If you're a fan of
IPAs, I highly recommend it.
