I have a nice bottle of Port that I'd quite like a glass of - however, it's
quite an expensive bottle and I'm the only one who drinks it. Once opened, how long should it be kept for? It's a bottle with a cork, not a screw top, so difficult for me to re-seal it well. al |

Get a stopper from Willie Sonoma or some such place. Cover the left over
port with a nitrogen blanket. It will keep in the frig for several months like that. Don't decant it, even if it old. It doesn't need it. Pour it into a smaller bottle so that there is as little air in it as possible....this will help extend it's life. Stace |

It's a bottle with a cork, not a screw top, so difficult for me to re-seal it well. There are nine different kinds of port... which one do you mean? No one will be able to give you a meaningful answer in the absence of any information. Generally, opened wood-matured ports will keep for much longer than bottle-matured ones. For example, opened (and stoppered) bottles of real aged tawny ports will keep for weeks and even months in the fridge, retaining most of their quality; vintage ports, on the other hand, need to be consumed in a day or three, especially as they need to be decanted, owing to a lot of deposit - otherwise they will start to resemble a much lower quality Late-Bottled Vintage or Vintage Character ports very fast. A cork seals better than a screw top. I've had port stay good for over a month this way. :-) Good stuff! I've got 63 and 70 ports sitting around I have done that preservation
technique with, without any adverse effect. Port is high in ETOH, so it lasts longer than 12% red wine without falling apart. However, if you want to preserve the wine, cover it with the nitrogen blanket, as I said before. The product I use is called "Private Reserve" Wine Preserver. The most conservative approach would be to put the remaining port in a small pharmacy bottle, that you fill to the top. Then, however, you should probably decant it first.
