Default Why price of eggs skyrocketed?

I live and shop in the Chicago near suburbs, and for some reason eggs
have suddenly gone up about 50% in about 10 days.

I was shopping in an Aldi discount supermarket today and noticed that
the price of a dozen large eggs was $1.35. Two weeks ago the same eggs
were 95 cents a dozen. And last week a large drug chain had large eggs
at 79 cents a dozen (admittedly a sale price).

As I continued shopping I found that large eggs ranged from $1.35 to
$1.69 at the several stores I visited. Even Sam's Club, which is
pretty competitive had large eggs at $2.54 for a dozen-and-a-half, or
$1.69 a dozen.

Does anyone know the reason?

I noticed the same thing recently and one person at the grocery said it was
supply and demand. She seemed to think that for whatever reason there were
less eggs produced. I observed that it is sort of funny how we can spend
several dollars on some food item or items we don't even really need but we
notice if the price of eggs goes up 30 cents.

Holidays. Expect the price of butter to skyrocket, too.

Try finding a new place to live! Jeesh! I just went thru that. I found a
box for $1000 a month.

Kilikini...apologies...where are you? I was assuming Hawaii? This is
very intersting subject that may be off topic to this group, but If
above is true. I'm astounded. I can understand high prices but not
average salary.

This sounds like an environment where people die daily at a high rate.

I'm familier with island living (though no where near as far off coast
as you may be) it sounds like there should be crippled beggars on the
streets like the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Steven,

You assume correctly, I live on Maui. You would be amazed at things here.
My husband (45 years old) makes $7.00 an hour at his job. I'm a free-lance
computer tech, so my salary varies...

I should send you a link to the Maui News Letters to the Editor.....LOTS of
people complain there about food and gas prices. Oh, by the way, the price
of gas is $2.37 cents a gallon.

Don'tcha want to visit PARADISE?

Tee hee,

Well, my thoughts on this thansgiving are both with you/Hubby and with
my family.

Yours for good luck in the future under economic circumstances that
would knock me for a loop..and mine for living in Massachusetts (where
the economy stinks...I was unemployed for 9 mnths but have found the
wonders of healthcare employment with my wife), for eggs are $1.20 and
milk is $1.99 for 1%, and gas has dropped to around $1.55 per gal.

Do me a favor...do send me the link...I'm seriously interested, not in
visiting, but in how people deal and stick up for their rights in your area.

Time for a Hawaiian President!

Happy Thanksgiving!

O...M...G!!! I'm soooo glad I don't have to pay prices like that! I just
went to the store today and milk (whole) is $2.37 gal., eggs are $1.19
for 1 1/2 doz., and butter is IIRC $2.79 lb here in Michigan.

Hawaii, right? I've heard economic conditions like that
usually referred to as Paradise Tax in places like Hawaii
and San Diego.
