Default Restaurant recommendations in Austin...

Anyone?
I've been to a few, Kim Phung's is always a good bet, as is Olive
Garden as a chain store, and Fudruckers of course if you want the
ultimate burger... ;-)

But I'm looking for someplace unusual and nice, with nice
atmosphere/decor.

Preferably oriental/Japanese, but am open to other suggestions.

It's for a birthday dinner.

Thanks!

I got one.
LemonGrass Asian Bistro.
Contact: 1310 S. RR 620, 7-A, 263-2221
One of the best Oriental restaurants in the Austin. Luckily, they also have wines. LemonGrass features 37 wines, with most available by the glass. The food here can be pretty spicy, so the wines that will best match are listed under Light, Crisp & Dry Whites.

Good choices: Pierre Spar Pinot Blanc ($20), Dr. M. Prum Riesling ($28), Frog's Leap Sauvignon Blanc ($31)

Good luck!

Papagayos in Austin for sea food. Take a book as it is a long wait to get
in.

Incidently, I do not recommend the Papagayos in Denver.

Don't listen to this spammer. He's never even been to Austin. This
is *not* a highly rated restaurant.

see news:austin.food.

I've never heard of any such restaurant in Austin. Neither has the
phone book or any web search.

Prolly a good idea. ;-)
I'd forgotten that that group exsisted...

Thing is, I've found that some of the "higher class" places are not
necessarily the best and might be overpriced.

Kinda like some wines... :-)

Thanks!

Fran's or Dan's has good burgers. A lot of people prefer Hut's.

Have you tried Fudruckers? G I like the whole "build your own
burger" concept. LOTS of mayo and cheese sauce, and pile on the
'mater, lettuce and pickle slices!
It's on Lamar in the same complex as Sun Harvest. South Lamar.

To me, the BEST burger served in the entire Austin/San Antonio area is
the "Maybe relevant cheese burger" at "Grins" in San Marcos. :-) We
have lived here now for 20 years and Grins has not only stayed in
business, they have expanded and added on to the building _3_ times!
Many other places have come and gone in the meantime. They started out
as just a burger place, (our fencing club in college hung out there)
but have gradually added neat stuff to the menu. The atmosphere is
very, very nice and the menu is excellent with a median price range.
They have the hat collection from hell on the walls...

Oh, and frozen 'rita's are served during happy hour during weekdays.

For chinese, the best food is at Din Ho - Ohlen and Peyten Gin next to
a Target.

Which Target? The one on Capitol of Texas highway near south Lamar?

For excellent Vietnamese, try Sunflower in the same
complex. There's also Hao Haoand Hunun for a little more atmosphere
than Din Ho.

I'll check that out. :-) I'd also like to try Indian food just one
more time before I give up on it. :-( So far, it's rilly gross!!!

It's for a birthday dinner.

I would go to Sunflower.

Do they serve Sashimi??? :-)
I've developed a real liking for raw food since I've been following
the Greenwich diet...

Also, decor is nearly as important to me as the menu!!! If I want
boring (decor not food), I'll prepare it myself. G I can get fresh
raw tuna at Central Market.

Danke!
