"Nancy Young" wrote in message ... Charlie, are the animals in the zoo and the other place safe? I know you're the person to ask. Thanks Nancy. The Zoo is fine. The Wild Animal Park is being threatened today (within 1/4 mile) but there are extensive fire breaks around and within the park. The park also has plenty of water and sprinklers covering the entire area. They did a few burns last spring to reduce brush fuel. They did move all the birds from the California condor facilty to the hospital complex this morning. The condor facility was in the area closest to the fire. Thank *you*. I appreciate the response, I was worried. I'm not familiar with the layout of San Diego, or where the fires are in relation to the zoo. Like, I could get to the zoo from the hotel, but I don't know the different areas like Poway or whatever. Obviously I'm worried about all the people, too, but they aren't stuck in cages which is what concerned me about the animals. How would one move all those animals to safety. nancy |

arranged random neurons, so they looked like this: Yes indeed. I remember the Canberra fires very well. I wasn't there but as do most SoCal people I am alert to big fires everywhere. I was sad for you and thank you for your thoughts for us now. Thank you Pete. Charlie - Please keep me posted about those SD folks you're in contact with. I'm slammed at work and may not see a post. I went for a (head clearing) walk at noon and realized I couldn't see the tops of the office buildings that are 1/2 mile away - and that's in Newport Beach! I cannot imagine what you guys are going through, but my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Hang in there. Okay, so what happens if the fires don't stop soon? I mean, the firefighters are going to be wore out (if they aren't already), and who will replace/relieve them? Is the National Guard available in California or have they all been deployed to Iraq? |

National Guard doesn't play a part usually. There are some NG tankers available. We have fire fighters from AZ, NV, CO, OK, OR, as well as all over CA and also from Canada. All fire fighters are now on revolving 12 hour shifts. IF all fire fighters from the Western U.S. were being used, the military could be involved. It is a matter of Federal law. We have a large number of firemen and equipment on the line now with more available. Today was the first day that aircraft could really make a contribution due to the weather and smoke cover. The San Diego fires alone are now at 1/2 million acres, 1200 homes lost and growing rapidly, 13 dead (17 more being investigated) and no end in sight for the biggest of them. Charlie |
