DOH!

The brand new Ultrex two speed ice cream maker I found in my mom's storage
shed looks like a no-go. I found crystalized something-or-other all around
the outside of the freezer bowl (f/b). I suspect it's the freezer liquid
from the inside of the f/b that has overflowed and leaked out and dried. I'm
not taking any chances and am tossing the whole thing (company defunct, no
replacement parts). I just thought I'd post a question about this type of
ice cream maker. Anyone know exactly what the liquid in these freezer bowl
style ice cream makers is?

Anti-freeze/coolant.

Do you realize how silly that sounds on the face of it? I must confess I
actually thought the same thing, at first, but c'mon. Think about it.

"a container that holds the freezing agent-either ice and SALT, a chemical
coolant or an electric refrigeration unit."

OK, but "chemical coolant" is a big stretch to anti-freeze, proper name:
polyethylene glycol.

I'm not outright disputing you. Just skeptical and need actual facts. BTW,
I think brining is a scam, too.

Nope, propylene glycol, polyethylene is a plastic, propylene is a gas. I
worked in a plant for a short time that made anti-freeze, it's propylene
glycol.

I don't know exactly what is in the ice cream maker bowl but it is a
solution that will freeze below 32F and hold it. Otherwise I would
suspect it would be a saline solution, ie. heavily salted water.

I think you mean polypropeline glycol. Polyethylene glycol is a
laxative. You'll find it labeled as Miralax.

Yes, no, maybe. There are many chemicals used as "antifreeze", some are
toxic, some are food safe. Rather like "bleach" which everyone thinks of
as sodium hypochlorite, even though there are many other bleaching
agents.

Actually, I meant ethylene glycol, which is the basis of anti-freeze and
highly toxic. Polyethylene glycol may be a laxitive ....many things are if
taken in high enough dosage.... but it's also a sweetener. Diet Dr Pepper
used to use it.

Not sure, but I'm wondering if you're going to buy a new one? I have a
Krups, and even though it doesn't make too much, it's pretty good...

Could it have been some kind of salt mixture?

No, not exactly despite looking around. The bowl for our Cuisinart
freezer contains something that freezes solid at normal freezer temps
and is liquid at room temp. Could be plain water for all I know We
had another bowl-type freezer thing ages ago that developed a hole in
it; the liquid inside wasn't plain water but may have been an alcohol
mix by the feel and smell of it.
