Default Really OT: Bad shot

A local woman caught someone breaking into her car, so she picked up the
nearest gun and fired off six shots. None of which hit the bad guy and
one shot entered a neighbour's home.

In addition to the whatever charges she will be brought up on, she
certainly should be 'sentenced' to a few weeks at a firing range with
some proper instruction on aiming and firing a gun

Aye. She missed the only way "gun control" makes sense: "hit your
target".

if she has a permit, it should be lifted.

If she did it here she would lose the gun and possibly end up in jail. Safe
storage laws make it impractical to shoot someone. Basically, you can only
use deadly force is someone is coming at you and posing a threat to your
person. You cannot use deadly force to protect property, so shooting at a
person who is breaking into your car and not posing a threat to your personal
safety is a major no no.

Given the statistics the police around here usually quote, it's unlikely
she had a permit in the first place.

Quite a few people locally are injured or killed accidentally by people
who just don't know how to use a gun. It isn't a requirement for getting
a basice permit/licence. Only people who want a 'concealed carry' permit
are made to take training.

There was an incident in Memphis last year where a guy had his gun sitting
on the coffee table. (Why, I don't know.) His dog accidentally shot him
with it! And no, the dog didn't have a permit

I read a similar news report last year. A hunter leaned his shotgun on a fence
while he climbed over it. His dog jumped up and pressed trigger. Ouch!!!
