Default Seeking advice on Freezer & Refridgerator storage

Freezer Storage
------------------------
I am thinking of purchasing a FoodSaver and using that to store my
items in the freezer. It seems to get good reviews on Amazon. Does
anyone use this or have any input on it?

Refridgerator Storage
-----------------------------
Pyrex or Lock & Lock ? Right now we use Sharper Image's Miracle Food
Storage containers (received as a gift). At first they were great, but
now the side plastic flaps that lock down no longer lock down. I guess
we could try writing the company and see if they would replace the
lids. But in the meantime, I'm thinking of Pyrex while my wife says
Lock & Lock (gets good reviews on QVC.com FWIW) Any suggestions here?

Thanks!

My neighbors, who purchase in bulk a lot and use the venison they get in the
hunting season, use it a LOT. Big family of five soon to be seven.

Wouldn't know.

I don't have one, but only because I don't want it out on the counter,
and I don't have any cupboard space for it. Instead, and because I'm
a single and don't buy in large quantities, I have a Reynolds "Handi-
Vac" which I use for incidental leftovers that go in the freezer, or
for pieces from multi-packs of things like pork chops.

Everyone I know who has a FoodSaver loves it.

Note: There is no "d" in refrigerator.

For plastic, use Rubbermaid - they close plenty tight enough (but they
aren't liquid leak-proof) and are relatively inexpensive. They stack
nicely. There's a big variety of sizes. They don't cost so much that
if one gets super-stained or otherwise wrecked, you mind throwing it
out. Or use glass, with lids. I don't know if any of the new ones
are leak-proof or not. And there's always Tupperware - pretty much
everything they sell with a tight-fitting lid is leakproof.

Note: Before storing anything with tomato sauce in anything plastic,
lightly spray the inside of the container with an oil baking spray -
it will keep the container from getting stained.

Yes, If you have the ability to buy and store in bulk and sometimes
re-portion the food, it works.

As example sometimes Albertsons will have bulk chicken breasts on sale if
you buy 5 lbs or more. They are always whole breasts and have to be cut in
half and or processed in some other way. I will grind my own chicken and
repackage it in the food saver bags. Or cut and store several breasts for
when we have a crowd.

The refill bags are a little expensive and it takes a while to get a feel
for cutting the size you need.

Overall if you have the time and the money it's a good tool.

We use ours quite a bit. I buy whole pork loin on sale and portion it
out. I've noticed that just putting things in freezer ZipLocs, they
get freezer burn after a while. The food packaged with the FoodSaver
does not.

I have a Food Saver and it's going up for sale in the next yard sale. I
recently purchased a cheap Reynolds one in the grocery store and I'm
infinitely happier with it. Bags are cheaper, too.

The food saver I have is a small one and it requires that things like
steak or chicken breasts be pre-frozen before vacuum sealing. If you
don't pre-freeze, you have to stuff a wad of paper towel into the top of
the bag or the liquid will break the machine when it sucks it in. The
cheapie grocery store Reynolds system has a way to trap the liquids and
still seal the bags.

As for the seal lasting, I find no difference in the two. Maybe the top
of the line Food Savers are better, but I'm happy enough with the little
Reynolds one so I'm not even going to try.

Are you cutting the bags too short? I've had that problem on the rare
occasion that I've cut a bag short or am reusing a bag that might be a
tad small?
I like to re-use bags when possible so I always cut them very
generously, so they get smaller and smaller with each re-use (as you cut
them open and lose that side).

You could be cutting the sheets to short. We have one of the larger,
higher-end models. They seem to have fixed the things you are
complaining about. Ours also sits upright for easier storage, though
that hasn't been an issue as we do use it a lot and have the counter
space for it.

It was actually a Christmas present this year for Bob (how romantic,
huh!) and our kitchen is the Gadget Master's Playground.

My sister discovered last summer that if you take whole peaches and
freeze them -- then FoodSaver bag them and store in the freezer, they
thaw out not being mushy or mealy and close to as fresh as when they
went it. I don't recall if she does a quick blanche, so I should ask
her about that. She does the pre-freeze because of the probability of
crushing, but our unit has a "Crush Proof" mode that I want to try
this summer.

I look forward to tinkering with Bob's gadget .... ;-)

I have a bag sealer -- not a vac sealer, though. Although I have two of
those, too. I use the Reynolds cheap vac sealer for fridge storage more
than freezer storage, though not entirely. I use the Tilia vac sealer
for some freezer stuff -- depends on how ambitious I am to haul it from
its living quarters.

I tend to use glass jars for a lot of fridge storage ‹ I have all sizes
available to me; I've the budget for a small country invested in Lock &
Lock for dry storage. I love it. I've bought it at the QVC store at
the Mall of America, at Kmart, Cub, Walmart.

My husband tells me that the consumables are much more expensive than the
equally appropriate zip lock freezer bags.

I am not cutting the bags too short. It's the same procedure with roll
bags or the ones the company makes that come in a box.

I ruined my first Food Saver because I didn't know about the liquid
business. The second one came with a video tape and the instructions on
the tape say to put a wad of paper towel between the fresh meat or
poultry and the seal. It's either that way or pre-freeze the meat then
package it frozen. What a bother!

I resue the bags until the get too small. I wash them out and let
them dry and they work just fine.

Actually, FoodSaver now make a unit that folds up (to upright) for just that
problem.

Thanks for everyone's input so far.

I ordered 10 piece Pyrex for now to see how that goes. We may also by
Lock & Lock as well.

As far as freezer bags are concerned - is Zip Lock one of the better
brands?

We are currently using Hefty and they seem "OK".

This was the FoodSaver unit I planned on buying. Just not so sure just
yet.....
