Hey, "phagiopath" is a well-established scientifical term! Look it up on Wikipedia as soon as I finish writing up their entry on the subject! |

... My wife takes her time when she eats. Ever since she was little. Not intentionally, but she is just naturally a slow eater. Takes her double the time to eat compared to me and the rest of her family when she grew up. Kinda funny. Don't know why either. Me, I wolf it down. As if I can't get it to my stomach fast enough. Oh, I enjoy the tastes in my mouth, but at the same time I fill my mouth up with as much food as possible (without looking like a chipmunk or being gross or obscene about it of course). As soon as the mouthful is about to go down I am ready to refill right away. Almost as if I gorge myself. I also like to make every bite almost perfect. If I am eating salad, i cant just have lettuce on my fork and dressing, there needs to be a sampling of everything else in the salad on the fork - 1 cherry tomatoe, 1 or 2 pieces of crouton, some chick peas - the perfect bite. I have one brother and a brother in law who, like your wife, are slow eaters. Lance, the BIL, is just really getting into his meal about the time everyone around him is finished. My brother is not only a slow eater, but he eats only one thing at a time; i.e. he eats all of his meat before eating any of the potatoes. I have another brother who eats more like you. He's done before anyone else has really made a dent in their plate. We often joke about whether or not he can actually taste any of it! Me, I'm neither slow nor particularly fast. I like to taste my food, but I don't move at a snail's pace. I do have some idiosyncrasies...for example, I get very irritated by certain foods touching on the plate. Corn would be the best example of that. I hate for anything, especially gravy, to touch my corn. I do not want corn *in* anything either. When I have something like a waffle for a pancake, and also have sausage or bacon or eggs, they shouldn't touch the waffle/pancake, and should preferably be on another plate. On the other hand, if I'm having, say, roast beef and mashed potatoes and gravy, I always have all 3 on every bite. But I don't want my veggies anywhere near it! ![]() kimberly |

Ah, another survey... combined with how you eat around the plate: One item at a time, or stack them on your fork? When I was a kid, I used to eat around my plate "clockwise" and ate everything separately. I only remember it because my dad laughed and said it out loud. Otherwise I wouldn't have know. Guess I was a picky eater too.... but I don't remember that part. Mom was so picky, my pickiness seemed like I had a broad culinary scope compared to her range. -- See return address to reply by email remove the smile first |

Nah. Ever since I was a kid it only ever took me 5 minutes to eat. I love food, can't get enough. Just asking. With some folks, that kind of 'training' lasts a lifetime. You can unlearn that, just like smokers unlearn smoking. I am naturally a slow eater, but I have a friend who is lightning fast, has been hospitalized twice in a year for blood pressure spikes and was told to eat much, much less. Because she ate so fast she was unaware of how much she was eating-- it takes 20 minutes for the signal "full" to get out. I talked her into eating while trying to figure out everything that was in a dish. It really slowed her down. She got very good at it, too, plus she has lost about 12 pounds. |
