I just finished "Evil Brothers, A True Crime Story" which was hard to
read. The story revolved around two brothers who killed 9 people and
was suspected in three other murders. All of this happened in Toledo,
Ohio over a two year period.

Did anybody eat at Tony Packo's?

often too. I often attend Mass at St. Stephens one block away.

Speaking of books (isn't there a few collectors of books here?)
this was just mentioned on the "CBS News Sunday Morning".
There are approx. 11 buildings with books for sale
at this location in Wisconsin!!

And you?

"The Audacity of Hope," by Barack Obama. To my amazement, he is a really
skilled writer.

I plan on reading that within the next month or so. It will be
interesting to have a little additional insight into the mind of, who
appears to be, our next President.

Well, Anthony...I have just finished a novel by John Grisham..'The Firm'...
It is the first novel of his that I have ever read... It is a 2 novels in
one book... I am about to begin the second novel..'The Pelican Brief'.... I
hope he takes care of the ending a little better than he did in 'The Firm'
though... I enjoyed his book .but felt that the story needed a much more
'descriptive' and explanatory ending than it got!...

And I always have a stack of cook books on the side for when I just sit down
at the table and having a 'cuppa'.. :-)

I love reading and have tons of books, many of which I have been
giving away to gain more room in my apartment. Now, I just borrow from
the library. I do, however, have lots of cookbooks, mostly Italian,
and I love to sit and read them. Naturally, after going through one or
two, I am ready to run into the kitchen and start boiling the water
for pasta...

Most nursing homes and retirement communities have a library and I
usually donate the books to them. Funny, even though I owned the book,
I was always very careful never to bend or cause creases in any of the
pages.

The NY Times and USA Today have great e-mail newsletters on the latest
books and reviews which they publish weekly. The Times really does a
great job with their book section:

I am currently reading an interesting book about the German resistance to
the Nazis. I usually read non fiction. Novels just don't do it for me
anymore.

Me, too. A couple books you might like are
Assignment in Utopia by Eugene Lyons, which
is an eyewitness account of the author's
experience as UPI Moscow correspondent at
the beginning of the Stalin era, and
Indiscreet Letters From Peking by Bertram
Simpson, which is an eyewitness account of
the seige of the foreign legation community
during the Boxer rebellion. I don't know
if either book is still in print, but they're
available from used bookstores listed he

They're both great reads, both because of
the excellent writing and the historical
events they describe.

As far as cookbooks go, I'm also re-reading "The Alice B. Toklas
Cookbook", just for fun.

Alice B. Toklas...hum, I haven't heard that name since the last time I
watched Emory mention her in The Boys In The Band. Great movie!

Anthony

Yes, it was a great movie, and a great Broadway play before that. I have
the movie on VHS. If you haven't read the Toklas book, you should.

Front Street sounds right. I've had lunch there a couple times amid all

I've pretty much just been reading history (heavy to WWII and the '20s
and '30s) for years, although I'm about finished with "A Farewell To
Arms", which seemed like a good thing to read along with a book I'd
started on Italy between and including the world wars.

There is a lot of interesting stuff written about WW I & II, also a lot of good
Holocaust stories. I recently read "The Mascot" and amazing story about an guy
who was raised by Latvian SS troops who, with the help of his journalist son,
traces his roots. I was also impressed with "Flyboys" about the fate of a
number of American navy fliers shot down and captured at Chichi Jima.

My current bedtime book is "Hungry Planet". The vignettes in it are
short enough so I can read 1 or 2 prior to zonking out.

Recent bus-commuting books:
"My Wilderness", by William O. Douglas (former Supreme Court Justice
from WA). Even though it was written nearly 50 years ago, the issues he
spoke about still resonate today.

"How to Read a French Fry". This was a re-read.

"Fork it Over", by Alan Richman. The descriptions of Florida deli and
early-bird specials are spot-on, despite the demise of Wolfie's and the
Rascal House.
