Tracy wrote on Thu, 08 May 2008 10:44:04 -0400: The only deep-fried vegetables that I eat (sparingly) are cooked Japanese Tempura style. I've never seen mushrooms tempura and I suppose some preliminary cooking would be needed but probably onion rings, which I have seen, require some work other than just frying. I may have mentioned it before but, of all tempura vegetables, I like sweet potato best but zucchini and other squash aren't bad. You can keep broccoli tempura but the same applies to broccoli in most shapes and forms! I love sweet potato tempura too! I have never seen deep fried mushrooms either, but they might make decent tempura. I'll do tempura at home every now and again. I usually do sweet potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, and pickled jalapeno slices. Oh, and sometimes green beans and shrimp for the kid and for the DH. Yes, green beans aren't at all bad. Do you blanch them before battering? I don't know much about making tempura since I only have it in Japanese restaurants. If they're young beans you don't need to blanch, otherwise yes. -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------- Thursday, 05(V)/08(VIII)/08(MMVIII) ------------------------------------------- Countdown till Memorial Day 2wks 3dys 13hrs 35mins ------------------------------------------- When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before. --Mae West ------------------------------------------- |

Just got a craving for deep fried mushrooms (from reading about fried shrimp in another thread). It's been a while. I used to get them at O'Connell's pub here locally, but stopped some years back. Lightly breaded, with horseradish dip. I must try horseradish! I've been using that a lot more lately, so it sounds good for mushrooms too. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org NEW -- Now evaluating a GG-free news feed: http://usenet4all.se |

I call fried mushrooms nuclear bombs because they retain heat like nobody's business. Yikes! That's only a problem if you make them yourself. In a restaurant, they'd be cool enough to eat by the time you get them. But yes indeed, they are hot when right out of the fryer. But we eat them anyway. |

Other favorites are breaded and deep fried zuchinni, cucumber, pepper strips, whole green beans and others. Several restaurants we used to frequent back in Ohio offer a mixed platter of all these goodies as an appetizer, served with various dips. Yummy, and half healthy...the veggies, not the deep frying. Red Lobster has, or at least used to have an excellent appetizer (which would've probably been most of a meal by itself, for some folks) that was, as I remember it, a plate of lightly breaded and deep fried veggie mix like you describe (zuchini, pepper strips and something else, I think) and calamari. Served with a couple-three dipping sauces. Battered and deep fried button mushrooms with a dipping sauce (usually mayo based). Why, we've even heard of them down here in Tennessee! Plain ol' catsup's good, too, if not exactly edgy. ![]() -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org NEW -- Now evaluating a GG-free news feed: http://usenet4all.se |

I'd actually go have some of that - probably as lunch with a bunch of those great biscuits - as it's sounding damnably good right now and it's about that time. But I don't have a convenient RL. Which is probably surprising, here in Los Angeles; it's not like I'm in Elko, Nevada trying to find one. -- Blinky Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://improve-usenet.org NEW -- Now evaluating a GG-free news feed: http://usenet4all.se |
