Other favorites are breaded and deep fried zuchinni, cucumber, pepper strips, whole green beans and others. Several restaurants we used to frequent back in Ohio offer a mixed platter of all these goodies as an appetizer, served with various dips. Yummy, and half healthy...the veggies, not the deep frying. Broccoli also. Lou |

Hey, just because I worked at Dead Lobster doesn't mean I eat there! Olive Garden, once. These were a snack at a local hot spot. So sorry you don't get out much in "SF". Not like they're a new thing. I dunno. Maybe it's because I don't do appetizers unless I'm going straight for the goodies like a plate of fried calamari. Why fill up on vegetables and fries when you can stuff yourself with those babies? The only deep-fried vegetables that I eat (sparingly) are cooked Japanese Tempura style. I've never seen mushrooms tempura and I suppose some preliminary cooking would be needed but probably onion rings, which I have seen, require some work other than just frying. I may have mentioned it before but, of all tempura vegetables, I like sweet potato best but zucchini and other squash aren't bad. You can keep broccoli tempura but the same applies to broccoli in most shapes and forms! -- James Silverton Potomac, Maryland E-mail, with obvious alterations: not.jim.silverton.at.verizon.not |

I have never seen deep fried mushrooms either, but they might make decent tempura. I'll do tempura at home every now and again. I usually do sweet potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, and pickled jalapeno slices. Oh, and sometimes green beans and shrimp for the kid and for the DH. -Tracy |

I have a Japanese sister in law and she is always telling me how she can't do tempura. It is never crispy for her. I buy a tempura mix - I don't remember the name, but it works really well. Tracy |

I rarely see fried anything on menus here, despite all the hoo-ha about everything in the south being fried. But 30 years ago fried mushrooms were a very popular appetizer. Jill |

They have been around places like Friday's and other chain bar/restaurants for twenty years. P.S. I told you Jill is an asshole. I go to read your posts, there she is, you have to hear about it. Right there on the menu next to the fried mozzarella sticks. I call fried mushrooms nuclear bombs because they retain heat like nobody's business. Yikes! nancy |

Add deep fried pickles to the list and those are very tasty. Add sauerkraut balls, okra, green tomatoes and some cauliflower to the list of course. Heck, in the South, if you can cut it to bite size then batter it, flour it, or cornmeal it and fry it, it's a hit. Just got a craving for deep fried mushrooms (from reading about fried shrimp in another thread). I don't know what kind of batter/coating you're thinking of, but I made tempura last week with shrimp and veggies. I had white button mushrooms on hand and some porcinis (now they're calling them "baby bells"), so they both got the tempura treatment. They were better than I expected, and as someone has mentioned they retained heat very well. Can't remember if I've ever had mushrooms at a tempura bar. -aem |
