There was a story in my local paper yesterday that Wegman's is trying to
open in store just outside of Boston. It isn't a done deal yet - the town has to approve a liquor license. Would it be worth the drive? For me - probably 30 minutes....I've only heard of the place through rfc - I have no idea really, what kind of store it is. Standard grocery/supermarket? Tracy |

Tracy Tracy, It's a megamart, not wholesale. The one near me is about 20 aisles with abhorrent nooks and cranny aisle obsticles and inside fast/junk food restaurants and build your own meal bars. Great variety of products but I don't shop there often enough to comment on any. Get a map from customer service after you walk in, to save on time and supermarket hypnosis. One was supposed to open about five miles away, according to their website but it's been over two years and nothing! The BUMS!!! Andy |

It consistantly comes out on top in supermarket ratings for a reason. Where's Joesparebedroom when you need him, he likes the place. They have many excellent departments, for instance, an excellent cheese department, prepared foods are really great, produce is so nice and terrific selection, etc. nancy |

More than just your standard supermarket, IME, but the stores do vary from location to location a bit. My brother, in Southeast PA, has a couple of nice stores near him (the one in Bethlehem, PA is *very* nice). I grew up an hour south of the one in Corning, NY, and that one is more like a regular (large) supermarket. It was announced that a Wegmans was to open up near us when we moved here. That was almost two years ago, and the opening date is still on "to be determined" status. ![]() Mary |

Tracy There are Wegman's and there are Wegman's. In many places in upstate New York they are just regular supermarkets, but in places like Central Jersey they are upscale supermarkets with a huge selection of ready-made foods. It's a favorite place for "princesses" to shop, my daughter among them. They do carry a slightly higher quality of meat and produce than the other local chains. One of the things they carry is a do-it-yourself planked salmon kit. Really nice on the backyard gas grill. Their salads are awesome. -- Janet Wilder Bad spelling. Bad punctuation Good Friends. I live right near the Pittsford, NY store, which is simply awesome. You might want to check in advance to see if you can have a meal as well. Pittsford has an both attached restaurant and a sitdown counter (near the bakery) where you can sip wine and eat grilled tilapia or whatever. Plus all inds of prepared meals. Great cheese shop/meats/seafood, fancy produce (e.g., truffles), lots of imported foods. They even have a good kitchenware section. I'd go with the intent of doing more than grocery shopping. But bring lots of money. -T |

It wouldn't be my regular shopping destination. I would be curious enough to check it out on occasion. I am not sure exactly what you mean by taking public transport. I use it as needed and drive as needed. But I am certainly not going to drive 30 minutes for a regular grocery store when I have one within walking distance (or within 2 miles) of my home. I was simply curious about the chain... Tracy |

: The proposal has it as part of a shopping mall. It wouldn't be my regular shopping destination. I would be curious enough to check it out on occasion. it really depends on the area what type of Wegman's goes in. in Penfield (an upscale area) the Wegman's is huge & has all kinds of fascinating departments. in Auburn, which is semi- rural & a working class city, the Wegman's is much more like a regular supermarket, only with *much* better produce. both those stores are NY stores, & the Auburn one is closest to where i live in NY in the summer. i had asked Danny Wegman why he didn't expand out here to NH & he said it's because he can't get farmers to supply fresh produce... if he builds a store in Mass & it's closer than 260 miles (currently the Auburn store is the closest to my house in NH as well), i *would* make the drive down every so often to stock up on produce & the odd items that Wegman's always seems to carry that none of the stores here do, like large pearl tapioca & some of their store brand items. as it is, i buy those things when i'm in NY & bring them back. I am not sure exactly what you mean by taking public transport. I use it as needed and drive as needed. But I am certainly not going to drive 30 minutes for a regular grocery store when I have one within walking distance (or within 2 miles) of my home. I was simply curious about the chain... some people who live in areas with public transportation seem to think that it's available everywhere & that it runs well and at convenient times. the MTA(Boston) isn't too bad, but as a contrast Manchester NH has public "transportation" consisting of bus service that has very limited routes & only runs from 7am to 6pm. it costs over US$1.50 for a ride. the Manchester taxis are all operated by one guy, even though they appear to be independant contractors. they will pick up as many riders as they can fit in the vehicle, drive you all over the town picking up & dropping off fares, and still charge you full meter when you finally get to where you wanted to go... an extra 10-15 miles later. and some places, like where i prefer to live, don't have public transportation at all. lee -- Last night while sitting in my chair I pinged a host that wasn't there It wasn't there again today The host resolved to NSA. |

I really like knowing that I can use public transportation when I need it...but I know what it is like to not have it. When I lived west of Boston - it was non-existent. -Tracy |
