Well, the piano arrived and is now assembled and in place. Although I bought it mainly for the "grand piano" voice it has, I'm amazed at the many other voices (128) it has. It can really produce some wonderful effects. It also has a digital recorder so I can playback what I play, and also transfer it to my PC via a USP port. I made me sick to sell my grand piano, but there was no way it was going to fit into the little rental house we have for several years. -- Wayne Boatwright ------------------------------------------- Friday, 04(IV)/25(XXV)/08(MMVIII) ------------------------------------------- Countdown till Memorial Day 4wks 2dys 10hrs ------------------------------------------- Don't start comparing yourself to me. I have been thinking of getting rid of my apartment size piano. When my wife wanted to take lessons, and wanted our son to take them too, she wanted to buy one. I wanted to get an electric piano but she wanted a real one. As it turned out, I was the only one who kept at the piano at all, and not that much because I prefer the guitar. So there is sits, taking up room in my family room. |

I made me sick to sell my grand piano, but there was no way it was going to fit into the little rental house we have for several years. I finally replaced my old Knabe upright a few years ago with a 1932 George Steck baby grand which had been sadly neglected for a long, long time. I had the guts pulled out, completely refurbished both case and "innards," which took about 6 months. When the old boy was delivered and set into place, I just sat there, hands hovering over the keys, enjoying the anticipation of hearing his voice for the first time. Magnificent. I took piano lessons for 14 years (from early childhood into college). Growing up we had a Kimball, but my mother bought an old Broadwood "boudoir" grand when I was in high school. It was 74" long (funny how a number stays with you) and had a square end and the strings weren't crossed. Had an action on it so stiff that could cripple - I learned "Prelude in C# Minor" and "Rhapsody in Blue" on it and it's a wonder I didn't have forearms like Popeye. But what a beautiful voice it had! Still love to play, esp. at Christmas when the family is around for carols. sigh Terry "Squeaks" Pulliam Burd -- "If the soup had been as hot as the claret, if the claret had been as old as the bird, and if the bird's breasts had been as full as the waitress's, it would have been a very good dinner." -- Duncan Hines To reply, replace "meatloaf" with "cox" |

When the old boy was delivered and set into place, I just sat there, hands hovering over the keys, enjoying the anticipation of hearing his voice for the first time. Magnificent. Terry, I have to admit that I'm envious of your Steck baby grand. The old pianos, fully rebuilt, beat new pianos all the way around. Forty years ago, when I was 23, I traded in the Everett upright my parents bought me when I was 4-1/2 years old for a 1928 Mason & Hamlin model BB (7 ft) grand that was in reasonably good condition, but age alone dictated that it should be rebuilt. I had it completely rebuilt from the inside out, including refinishing of the rosewood case. It was always my pride and joy, and I've lost count on how many times it was moved from houses, condo, apartment, etc. It was the most beautifully sounding piano I had ever played. It was nearly 4 years ago when we had to move to a small rental that I was forced to sell it. The entry to the house had a small permanent porch that prevented getting the piano through the door. We are now in our own house again, but it's rather small and not suitable for even a baby grand. I don't care for acoustic uprights, so chose the digital piano instead. Since I set it up this week I've been quite impressed with its performance and its sound, but I still covet grands when I see them. :-) I took piano lessons for 14 years (from early childhood into college). Growing up we had a Kimball, but my mother bought an old Broadwood "boudoir" grand when I was in high school. I've seen that type of piano before, but the only one I've played was not in very good condition so it was difficult to judge how well it might play. I began taking piano lessons at 4-1/2 and continued through 2 years of college and was planning a major in music, when I did an about face and changed majors. We had another piano at home for a few years when I was growing up. My great grandmother gave us her square piano, which was a gorgeous piece, but as with most square pianos, it was difficult to play and didn't have the best sound qualities. It was also huge and really took up too much room. We sold it to a collector. Still love to play, esp. at Christmas when the family is around for carols. sigh I've really missed playing, and I'm anxious to regain as much of my ability as I can. Yes, the holidays are especially nice for having a piano for people to enjoy.
