Wish I was, I have always said geos have the perfect balance between field and office work. I have an accounting degree and work at evaluating the financial side of project acquisitions and ultimately sourcing finance from private investors and institutions. JB |

I have to admit, I am a bit confused about your above paragraph... Yes I can understand that. It wasn't phrased very well was it? What I meant to say is that living and working in another country gives one valuable insight into the culture and often politics, etc. of that country. If this experience is also coupled with an enquiring intellect and subsequent authentic research into that country, it is of immense value. However, there are many internationally renowned scholars whose work on other countries is generally accepted even though they may have never actually lived in the country of which they have done research. Does this make sense to you? I was fortunate enough to live in Fiji for four years and also fortunate to have had higher education so that my experience of that tiny country helps me when I read really informed studies of the current situation there. However, I am not in the same league as someone whose studies of Pacific Islands have taken most of their working life, even if they have never actually lived in one of those states. Firstly, you say "Forget about having to go and live and work in a country in order to be able to contribute to a debate about that country', but then you go on to say that 'Those who have been to that country are frequently better informed.....'? Forgive me if I am wrong, but this gives me the impression you didn't make the debate team in high school... I am hoping you meant to say that doing 'armchair research' for a particular country can indeed be useful and educational - to a degree. However, actually working/living there is more important in order to be able debate about it with any real authority. FWIW I wouldn't presume to get into a debate with you about New Zealand because IIRC, that's where you currently reside? I try not to announce where I come from because it tends to generate torrents of nasty abuse from our Friends Across The Ditch and I can well do without that. My career took me there for a few years, after which I did not join many Kiwis and emigrate. And this was simply because of the insufferable comments about the Poor Kiwis and how unfortunate we are to have such a poor economy. Oh and the spiders and snakes as well ... but better not to go into that ... The only thing I know with any certainty about that country is that *I* find the imported NZ mussels available here absolutely wonderful. Had some for dinner last night as a matter of fact. I like our mussels as well. The ones I have had in other countries seem so small by comparison. Or perhaps I ate at the wrong restaurants! Oh, I almost forgot - have had NZ lamb too. Delicious. I think our best lamb gets exported. I have problems sometimes with lamb here - especially when it is getting past the spring lamb stage! I guess you get it frozen and it is the really young lamb. Gives our Karoo lamb some stiff competition. The Golfer's Wife |

Does this make sense to you? A lot more sense, yes. However, l personally wouldn't trust information completely that was published by somebody who had never actually been there themselves - 'internationally renowned scholar' or not. shrug I was fortunate enough to live in Fiji for four years and also fortunate to have had higher education so that my experience of that tiny country helps me when I read really informed studies of the current situation there. Again, I still think you could tell those learned scholars a thing or two they didn't know if they hadn't lived/worked there for a while themselves BTW, it's an inquiring intellect, not enquiring.... evil grin Anyway, I think we are going to have to agree to disagree about this, and leave it at that. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy Is that chip on your shoulder edible? |
