Reason #572 to love penzey's: They ship to FPO addresses, unlike almost
everyone else. I just ordered Lemon grass, garam masala, sansaam chili
peppers, galangal, chinese 5 spice powder, and chicago steak seasoning.
Next time I'll try the adobo. Basically these are all spices that I
can't get here. Sure, I could make my own 5 spice, but I'd just have to
order parts anyway, so I'm trusting them to make it good. The first
ingredients are for red curry paste, which isn't sold here so I'll have
to make from scratch.

For now I'm making my curry with the help of the "Golden curry" medium
hot box mix. Hope it doesn't suck.

Hey, where you at? If there's something you can't find (could be grits,
could be anything else) let me know at the email here and I might be able to
ship it. FPO is pretty cheap. My local asian market has a good assortment
of that sort of stuff if you are in Europe. Use the same box and send back
anything locally interesting g. Not expensive stuff, just whatever you
think would be fun. I used to mail back packs of chopsticks (pretty ones,
not the disposable wood ones) I got for 100yen, toss in some dried
mushrooms, local Japan hard candies, etc.

I'm in Italy..and I totally appreciate your offer!. There's not "Asian
groceries" or anything like that here. There's one chinese restaurant
in the city and it's not good at all. That's when I really miss the
states...when I want to go to the supermarket or whatever and just
freaking buy something without having to have it special ordered or
something. Don't get me wrong, I love the local food, but sometimes,
you just want something different, KWIM ? It's funny, when I was in
Japan all I wanted was Italian (which I was unable to find any good
examples of) but in Italy all I want is asian food...lol.

I well can picture that one! I was in Sasebo, you probably in Yoko or Oki.
I can get a reasonable amount of 'our Japan goodies' here in my area
(Norfolk VA). Some stuff I cant find but I have suitable replacements of.

Believe me, been there. 6.5 years in tiny sleepy Sasebo g. The commisary
was extremely well done for it's size, but was little bigger than 3 7-11's
bunched together. Shopping on the economy was normal for most of us, but
some stuff was pretty pricy or you just couldnt find it (or couldnt identify
it!).

I still laugh about how on my first shopping trip I came back with 'kleenex'
to open the box and find rubber bands...

Here's one: I was pregnant with my daughter and I NEEDED fruity pebbles
and milk. So I waddle across the street from my apartment building (on

I was navy, but had the good fortune to be stationed at Yokota Air Force
Base. Short little train ride to Tokyo. I'd honestly go back in a
second. We came here from Norfolk, so yeah, there was niiiiiiice places
to get goodies. We lived in housing right next to the Little creek base.
I miss the local farm fresh store...you can get pretty much anything
there. If I think of anything I need I'll definitely take you up on it!

Ok! I was way south in Sasebo. I never made it to Yokota but heard it was
nice. You had a much larger commisary. Sasebo one was winning world-wide
awards (well deserved) for highest customer satisfaction for a small one.
They really worked *hard* with their small space.

Nicest housing I've ever lived in. Especially compared to the shoebox
that they call a 3 bedroom here.

I know the store of which you speak. I bought a HUGE bag of star anise

Penzey's is terrific, but as a matter of personal taste I find their
five spice powder too heavy on the cinammon, so be prepared to doctor
it up a little. Of those you named, I like their garam masal and
really like the Chicago steak seasoning, which I regularly mix into
hamburger patties. Another Indian mixture you might like is called

Thanks for the suggestion....I plan on doing lots of ordering from then
and will give it a spin.

And I am staying about 6 miles from a Penzeys...and it is right across
the street from the hospital where I am working.

Guess I have to go buy more spices, based on that suggestion....LOL.

The Penzeys folks are going to get used to seeing me...coming in every
week, to buy something you all have talked about here...LOL.
