Hello, All!

A recent post expressing dislike of orange creme and chocolate caused me to wonder
what are other's favorite flavor combinations? To me, orange and chocolate is
perhaps the best combination that has ever been invented. I'll admit that the
Spaniard who thought of sweetening chocolate was another human benefactor. Rum and
raisins are another great one for ice cream.

I like chocolate with orange, mint, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or coffee!
:-) Oh, and I have also had chocolate with pineapple and found it to be surprisingly
good.

Let's see....
coffee & vanilla
coffee & cinnamon
cinnamon & vanilla
lemon & blueberries

On the savory side....
beef and onion/shallot
chicken and sage
rosemary & sage
tomato & basil
tomato & black pepper

I cannot stand chocolate and fruit together. It's one of the few foods I dislike
enough that I will find a way to discreetly spit it out if I accidentally get a
bite of it.

Wow! it's one of my favorite things! lol Nothing like a chocolate covered strawberry
to make a summer evening complete ;-)

Some of my favorite flavor combos (not necessarily for ice cream)

Coffee and chocolate
Peaches and berries
Sour cream and onions
Coconut curry

Oh! I forgot sour cream & onions...or chives

Yeah, we get the message. LOL.

My dad could not abide ANY meat served with ANY fruit. To him, they
just didn't belong together. (No ham and pineapple or cherries or
raisins; no chicken & mandarin oranges or lemon; no pork with apples
or applesauce, etc.....)

With the exception of lemon/citrus...I am pretty much the same way. I just don't get
the attraction of cherries, pineapple, etc with *meat*.
Lemon or orange seems different to me, somehow :-)

I dislike fruit with meat, also. The exception is lemon. The thought
of, say, chicken with raspberry sauce does nothing for me. I pick
that orange garnish some restaurants decorate the plate with as soon
as the food arrives so it doesn't accidentally mess up my meat.
Cider glaze with pork chops, okay, but you can hold the applesauce.

nancy

nancy, you and I are of the same mind here. And I always hated those red cinnamon
apple slices they always had with pork at school. *shudder*

I have a lot of combinations I do like, but the ones that I don't, I really don't!
lol

What about curry dishes that contain fruit? I love 'em myself!

Oops. I run at the first whiff of curry, so adding fruit won't help.
I would eat some fruit/meat combination, though not happily. Curry,
you can't get me close to it. My mother made a curried dish when I
was a kid, I hated it then and still, that overpowering smell makes me
wonder what people see in it.

nancy, suddenly thinking she's fussy

fussy? Nahhhhh!
If you're fussy, then I would have to admi..err...say I was fussy too ;-)
I also am in concurrence with you on this one...never liked curry, and sincerely
doubt I ever will.

I also like peanut butter and fig jam on toast, and a salad made of
cubed watermelon and finely chopped white onion.

Peanut butter and fig jam sound delicious. I'm not so sure about the
watermelon and onion.

Wayne, let me tell you, watermelon and onion go shockingly well together! I made a
salad last summer that had watermelon, Vidalia onion, green tomatoes.... oh heck,
here's the recipe!

1/2 Vidalia onion, thinly sliced (if you can't find a Vidalia, you can use a white
onion)
2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar
2 tablespoons orange juice (preferably fresh)
2 teaspoons honey
1/2 jalapeño, seeded, veined and finely minced
1 small garlic clove, halved
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black peppercorns
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
3-pound seedless watermelon, rind removed, cut into 11/2-inch chunks (about 6 cups)
1 medium green tomato, halved and thinly sliced
1/4 cup fresh whole mint leaves
4 cups arugula, tough ends removed

.. Soak the onions in a large bowl of ice water for 20 minutes. Drain, blot with a
paper towel, and set aside.

.. While the onions soak, whisk the red-wine vinegar, orange juice, honey, jalapeños,
garlic halves, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Set aside for 10 minutes, then
remove and discard the garlic and slowly whisk in the olive oil. Taste for seasoning
and adjust if necessary.

.. Place the watermelon, green tomatoes, onions and fresh mint leaves in a large bowl.
Season with a little salt and pepper, add the arugula and the dressing and gently
toss to coat. Taste for seasoning and serve immediately.

It is *good*, even my 13 yr old liked it...and she is picky

I'm not pairing things into ice cream here, but these are a few of my
favorite foods together. How about:

Bacon wrapped scallops?
Sauteed mushrooms on a burger or steak?
Pork and sauerkraut?
Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing?
Pasta, spinach, tomato, garlic and cheese?
Cheese, crackers and wine?
Salmon and asparagus?

Too many choices. This question isn't fair. LOL.

I could eat at your house and be happy, and you at mine!

Any time you're in Florida, you're welcome to come over. :~)

And any time you're in Raleigh, ditto!

BTW, have you ever had shrimp and oysters wrapped in bacon and grilled?

I know you weren't talking to me but...
My husband and I were at a restaurant down in the Gaslamp, and they accidentally
brought us the wrong appetizer (we were supposed to get a coconut shrimp my husband
loves, but they brought bacon wrapped bbq shrimp instead)...and I was surprised to
find I didn't hate it :-) It was grilled, the bacon was crisp on the outside, the
sauce was delicious...I didn't even mind the shrimp! lol

That's what I was thinking too. Here's a couple from my family:
from my husband...
spinach and strawberries
avocado and tomato
olives and bleu cheese

from my daughter
bacon and whipped cream (from sunday breakfast! lol)
french fries and chocolate shake
rootbeer and lemon

and from my son
soy sauce and steak
guacamole and salsa
lime and avocado
