My dad could not abide ANY meat served with ANY fruit. To him, they
just didn't belong together. (No ham and pineapple or cherries or
raisins; no chicken & mandarin oranges or lemon; no pork with apples
or applesauce, etc.....)

I dislike fruit with meat, also. The exception is lemon. The thought
of, say, chicken with raspberry sauce does nothing for me.

ROFL Did you just happen to catch Rachel Ray's show this afternoon?!

that orange garnish some restaurants decorate the plate with as soon
as the food arrives so it doesn't accidentally mess up my meat.
Cider glaze with pork chops, okay, but you can hold the applesauce.

Separated at birth, I'm tellin' ya! I don't mind the orange garnish so
much, I take it off the plate because it gets in the way. But no applesauce
with pork for me, thanks.

What about curry dishes that contain fruit? I love 'em myself!

Oops. I run at the first whiff of curry, so adding fruit won't help.
I would eat some fruit/meat combination, though not happily. Curry,
you can't get me close to it. My mother made a curried dish when I
was a kid, I hated it then and still, that overpowering smell makes me
wonder what people see in it.

nancy, suddenly thinking she's fussy

I've only ever had one curry I liked. It was a lamb curry (no fruit!) that
wasn't overwhelmingly screaming CURRY! at me. Some restaurant outside of
Dallas, I can't recall which.

That would be a NO! (laugh)

It's not a big deal, I just don't eat applesauce in general and I sure
don't want it with my pork chops. Aside from lemon that I like quite
well with chicken, there is the pineapple juice in my steak marinade that
I like very much. It's not a hard and fast rule.

Hello, All!

A recent post expressing dislike of orange creme and chocolate caused me
to wonder what are other's favorite flavor combinations? To me, orange
and chocolate is perhaps the best combination that has ever been
invented. I'll admit that the Spaniard who thought of sweetening
chocolate was another human benefactor. Rum and raisins are another
great one for ice cream.

Arugula and chevre.
Saffron and marsala (see popover and turkey soup post).
Orange marmalade and brown mustard- dipping sauce for eggrolls and other
fried foods.
Tomatoes and parmesan cheese.
Walnuts and blue cheese.
Pecans and real maple syrup.
Haagen Dazs latest reserve flavor: Toasted Coconut-Sesame Brittle.
Pineapple and coconut.
Strawberries and cream.
Peaches and cream.
Chocolate and coffee.
Cassis and champagne.
Ginger and soy sauce.

Fun question. I'm sure I'll think of more.

She did a thing, like what you do when you have just a little bit of
something left in a jar. Just happened to be raspberry jam. She added
dijon mustard, salt, pepper and (you guessed it) EVOO. Shook it all up,
said use it as a salad dressing or... and she drizzled it all over some
browned chicken breast halves. I cringed. Sorry, none for me!

Yogurt and cucumber (tzatziki).
Shrimp and lemon.
Collards and bacon.
Duck in orange sauce.
Chicken and noodles.

Many fine recipes call for just those things mixed together. In fact, I
know Penzey's sells their Raspberry Magic (or whatever they call it) for
this type of use.
You've not tasted it yet you're already sure you dislike it? Your mind
is already made up, eh?
I'd never let my kids get away with that childishness. They'd have to at
least try a bite.

I was going to say that, can't believe you came up with that.
Garlic and onion, that's a winner. Okay, garlic and a lot of
things.

You've made me remember a favorite saying from my college cooking days:

If it doesn't taste good sauteed with garlic, and lemon, then God didn't
mean you to eat it.

I applied the truism to calamari. It was wonderful.

I agree with you - a friend and I once got take-out Chinese - she ordered
curried chicken. I gagged so hard at the smell in the car that we had to
stop and throw it in a dumpster before we got home. So it's not just you.

How do you know I've never tasted raspberry something (obviously not what
she shook up in a jar today) on chicken? I didn't say that. I don't care
for most fruit paired with meats. There are exceptions. Raspberries aren't
one of them

Yum - and bacon and sauteed onion. The smells just complement each other.
Also good on pizza.

Youre fussy, Nancy!

Some days, around here, I think maybe. Most days, I like just about
every food people talk about.

nancy (curry still stinks)

Truth be told, I think we're all fussy here, Nancy. OTOH, I love curry.
