What is Organic?
What does the word mean? OK, I know it's supposed to be natural food, but why dont they just call it natural? Organic sounds like there are organs in the food. Are they human, animal, or musical organs? Could they be sexual organs? Organic.... Organ Ic..... Organ Ick..... Did Jesus eat organic food? Does the president eat it? What about all the Hollywood celebrities? Well, if anyone knows what organic really means, please enlighten all of us. In the meantime, I am going to go drink an organic beer and light an organic cigarette before I have organic sex, using my organic sex organs, with my organic wife's organic female sexual organs. Then I got to get some organic sleep before I get back in my organic car, fill it with organic gasoline, and go back to my organic job. Phil |

wrote in message ... Well, if anyone knows what organic really means, please enlighten all of us. It has three meanings that are related. 1) Living material or once living material. So wood, leather, meat, grass, manure and hair are organic. (2) A subset of chemistry, that is the chemistry of carbon compounds. (3) Edble produce grown with "natural" as opposed to synthetic inputs. These "natural" inputs are (1) above plus naturally occuring minerals (which by definition cannot themselves be organic) such as ground rocks of various types. Organic food is made from (3) but the problem is that there are many organisations that define what is permitted somewhat differently. These definitions often contain apparent anomalies. For example using pyrethrums as insecticides may be OK if derived from daisies but not if produced synthetically, despite the two being chemically identical. Or an organic standard may allow the use of synthetic potassium sulphate as a fertiliser but not ammonium nitrate. Of course the matter is confused even more by the advertising industry who are capable of taking any word that seems to attract customers (what does "natural" mean in the context of foods?) and making it mean nothing or anything they want. My advice is if what you put into your body is important to you and you think that organic food may be better than anything-goes food, to find an organic certifying body whose standards you like and buy food with their label - or grow it yourself. Otherwise forget it as just having the word "organic" on the label means almost nothing. David |

Growing it yourself doesn't make it organic, even if you don't use chemicals there still may be chemicals in the ground from previous use... and there is no way to keep land pristine, not anymore, there are just too many people, so as long as there's gravity run off happens. Otherwise forget it as just having the word "organic" on the label means almost nothing. Actually the only thing organic means is that you will pay double and more... and when you buy veggies from the organic bin you have no way to know... you can bet your bippee those organic peppers for $4/lb come out of the very same crate as those selling for $2/lb... and it's legal 'cause in fact all the peppers in that crate qualify as organic (whatever the frig that is), but the masses being asses it's a very EASY scam, in fact the imbeciles are scamming themselves... marketing organic food is probably the biggest scam of the century, probably since the begining of time. Produce is no more organic than poultry permitted ten minutes a day out of their cage are free range... there is no such thing as organic and free range, they're made up Madison Ave. terms. Even game hunted in the woods ain't organic, how do you know whose sceptic pond/roadside culvert they're drinking from... hunted game contains far more chemicals than farmed... tuna inna can was wild too. Hunting is all all about making money and extreme cowardice of inherently violent mentally diseased, has not a whit to do with cleaner food... hunting ain't a sport... it's murder. I grow a lot of my own produce and I don't use any chemicals but no way will I be lulled into thinking it's organic. The only reason I don't use chemicals is because I don't know nearly enough about how to use chemicals properly, I have no laboratory to analyze my soil or produce nor do I know how. I just eat and stfu. There is no such thing as "organic", not so long as it's from this planet. Yoose think the USDA tests food for organic, they can't test pet food, they can't even test kids toys for lead until it's too late... the FDA, like all govmint watchdogs is just a huge inept jumble of assholes... you don't need to be any kind of expert to figger something is wrong *after* people are dying.
