Okk, I am curious, how did you go to Cuba? Are you US? I didn't think
we could go to Cuba and truthfully I have always wanted to go. How did
you do it?

You can go as a tourist via Mexico. The U.S. government
says your passport isn't valid for travel there, but
it's not up to them whether Cuba accepts it, which they
will. I believe if you Google around, you can find a
travel agency that can set up a trip.

I have friends in Puerto Rico who simply book a flight and go. They say
Cubans are delighted to accept our cash.

There are lots of legal ways to visit Cuba from the US.

You can do it via Canada. The Cubans are quite happy to have you spend
money there and they simply forget to stamp your passport.

There have been several American scuba divers who go to Cuba. They want
to see your passport in Cuba, but they do not stamp it.

lol I was going to say the same thing... Cuba wants tourist money.
They are no dummies. ;-)

The restrictions against Cuba seem to slowly be relaxing. I understand
that they are at least getting US food shipments again, including Cattle.

The thing I hate most about trade embargoes is that they don't ever hurt
the government or their cronies. They only ever hurt the people that
have no control over the situation in the first place.

Their military eats just fine.

And a US passport is *valid* for travel to Cuba, per US Treasury Dept.
regulations it's illegal for unauthorised US travellers to spend US dollars
there...

In the old days (30 - odd years ago), US passports did have a note
restricting their validity (per State Department exception) for travel to
North Korea, North Vietnam, and Cuba...no more. Until recently the only
nation USAin's were "forbidden" from travelling to was Libya...that
restriction has been eased.

I encourage you to check this one out for yourself. Call the State Dept. and
check their website:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_p.../cis_1097.html.
Yes Cubans will allow you in, certainly they want your money and they will
not "stamp" your passport, so you may not be caught when you reenter, still
does not make it legal for a US person to travel there without approval.
What some of these people are saying here can be somewhat, kinda sorta
true, some pure BS and they will argue it to the day they die cuz they read
it on the Internet. But I'm betting on the Government to be correct in its
regulations and laws they wrote . You can certainly go to Cuba by way of
Canada, Mexico, Europe as well as many Carib islands, BUT a US person is
subject to US Laws, and the US Legal System to go there unless you have
license approval. I persoanlly know of a photog her in WA that goes to
Cancun and then hops a plane to Cuba. Even though he is in an approved
group, he is not specifically a Journalist so he has never been able to get
a license, so he "skirts" the laws. Another I personally know is a US
Citizen of Nicarguan Decent visiting on a UW Latin Amer. Study Program.

as to the seriousness of this, here is but one link:
http://afrocubaweb.com/news/cubatravelnews.htm

War Story: I recall being briefed in a US Customs ( Pre ICE) C/N course
that a US businessman was fined ( want to say 15-20K?) for trips he took to
explore biz ops in Cuba. One thing US persons may not be aware of is that
US Custom will pay up to a 10% snitch fee of what they collect and it does
not have to be paid to a US Person. Guess who turned in this Business man?
A Cuban Immigration official who was stiffed of his "tip". Your chances of
getting caught? probably slim but with all this HLS hysteria I would not
chance it.

What if you spend none of your own US $ there, and the govt of, say,
Venezuela pays all your expenses? Anyone know?
