I was actually wondering how your N+D survived you giving up rather than
how you got on.

Steve,

I wasn't a bother to N+D. I didn't behave differently, outwardly. It was
inwardly torture!

TRUE.

No, he's right, it does stink. He just never noticed it before.

What Becca said about stopping smoking when she was sick, that's how I
got off of caffeine. I was terribly sick for several monthes, too sick
to care if I had a Pepsi and too sick to notice the caffeine withdrawal
symptoms. I've been caffeine free since 1998.

Glad you quit. The last time I quit caffeine was in June, this was my
3rd time to quit. I had a headache for 2 weeks. Ugh, I never want to go
through that again.

I gave up smoking (among other things) in January of 1977. At the
time I had been doing about 3-1/2 packs a day. I smoked for 16 years
until that day. Then one day with God's help (not trying to
proselytize; just saying what worked for me) I just stopped. I've
been free of nicotine and a few other chemicals ever since. It's
been 30 years so far.

The weird thing was, after nearly 30 years being smoke free, last
year I got lung cancer anyway. They took out a big portion of my
right lung and I went through 4 months of nasty chemo but now I'm OK.
The experience made me even more determined to live every day to the
fullest. That's why I'm going fishing in the Amazon this fall. It's
also why there's a big, shiny, new motorcycle in the garage. :^)

Anyway, glad to read that you quit. I hope you never have to endure
what happened to me. Although in my case it didn't hold, the odds
are far more in your favor for having quit. Stay strong.

Congrats on being smoke free! I am so sorry to hear about lung cancer, I
hope that is the end of your health problems.

Enjoy your fishing trip in the Amazon, I spent three weeks there and I
enjoyed every minute of it. If you get the chance, visit southern
Brazil. It is a huge country that varies as much, or more, than the US.

Be very, very careful on that motorcycle (ok, I am taking off my Mom hat).

Thanks, Becky. The last two tests were clean. They tell me if I go
5 years (4-1/2 to go) with no relapse I'm home free.

So far I've been to Rio de Janeiro, Cabo Frio, Buzios, Salvador, Sao
Paulo and one other city whose name escaped my addled brain at the
moment. Next year my wife and I hope to have time for Foz de Iguazu,
Fortaleza, Curitiba, etc. We have friends from all over Brazil and
everyone insists their city is the most beautiful. They also all
insist we come and visit so I guess we'll be traveling. :^)

Yeah, I'm pretty cautious. In SW Florida (aka God's Waiting Room) we
have a lot of people on the road who can't remember their own
addresses. Wrong side of the highway wrecks are all too common.
After my 86 year old father sailed through a few red lights my mom
finally took his keys away. He doesn't mind, thank God.

One of my friends lives in Ft. Lauderdale, he says an elderly person
drives through the front of a convenience store, or into a swimming
pool, about once a month.

I am glad your mother took the keys away from your father. It is hard to
give up your independence, I am sure.

You'd think after a few months of that they'd take his license away.

Fortunately, he doesn't feel like he's lost his independence so much
as his position in the family. He is so in love with my mother that
he'll do anything to make her happy though and that includes giving
up driving. While he feels frustrated knowing that he can't remember
things (he does remember being really smart and knowing stuff
before), he is content to let mom lead the way. She never complains
but I can see the toll it's taking on her watching the man she adores
slowly slip away.

For me it's the same. He has always been my hero.

My dear f-i-l doesn't care if he drives or not anymore, although it was
tough for him making that decision. It's been a year or more now.
He doesn't care as long as he gets to the casino somehow :-)

So he doesn't drive OR think! Hope he hits the big one someday. Then you can
borrow his limo when he's not using it.
