nb,

During the Christmas Day, 2000 partial solar eclipse, without looking
through the viewfinder I pointed my digital camera in it's general
direction and took this photograph!

It's supposed to be a red orb by 5:00 am Florida time tomorrow. I hope I
can get my camera to focus!

kili

kili,

It's going to be in totality for 90 minutes. I'm hoping the sun is rising.
I'd like a shot of a red moon on a blue sky. X-ing fingers.

Andy

Actually it's more for decoration, I rarely ring it... but it sure is
LOUD!

I'm glad got it while it was still available, it's the nicest one I
could find on the net at the time... Om will be happy to hear it's
solid cast iron (the rest are cast aluminum, cost much more and don't
ring nearly as well). If I remember correctly it cost $189. Got it
he http://www.cooperseeds.com/viewitem.php3?prod=87

If anyone finds another source please let me know. And if you get one
be sure to have help when you need to place it atop it's cradle, that
thing is heavy. Mine sits some 8' in the air, what a job getting it
up there on my own... had to figure a way to lash two ladders and
planking and still wasn't easy lifting that thing. Also wasn't easy
finding a 5" post, that's what it's made to fit. There are 4" and 6"
but 5" is rare around here. I finally located a private lumber mill
that makes it's own cedar fencing and furniture, they had lots of 5"
posts, cedar, and pine too. The people at Home Depot and Lowes swore
to me that there is no such thing as a 5" post, they hadn't a clue...
lumber can be cut to any dimension. Where I lived before Home Depot
and Lowes carried 5" posts, they were used for the gate posts... 4"
for line posts and 6" for corner posts or double gate posts.

Sounds like you have fun. :-)

You once said you ring it to spook the deer during hunting season. G

Yes, I've done that a few times... but then realized it didn't help
the deer, just drove them through the woods to the next road, with
more hunters.

A red moon with a blue sky would make an incredible photo! Unfortunately,
it doesn't get light here until about 6:45. We'll see though! Thanks,
Andy.

The only way you are going to keep your deer from being hunted is to
purchase adjacent property, post it and deer fence it.

And provide them with feed when their numbers get to be too high for the
local environment to feed them.

Sheldon,

Well then, tomorrow morning would be a fine time to ring it, to prevent the
neighbors from missing such a stellar event.

Just have donuts and coffee out, to settle down the angry mob.

cool, andy!

I'll be kicking myself in the ass till I die for not getting a picture
of the astounding Hale-Bopp view I witnessed in the flesh. The thing
hung in the Winter sky and loomed so large and looked so intense, I
almost bumped my head on it when I got out of my car. It was
positively brilliant. By contrast, Haley was a mere smudge, a minor
bug splat in the sky. I saw the very nice Comet Hyakutake, also.

I later joined an astronomy club, but after NASA started publishing
Hubble shots on the net it seemed absurd to look through a $3-5K
hobbyist telescope to see a mere spec of light in the night sky when I
could see these fantastic images on my computer screen. Recently, I
was going to do the new google "sky" thing, but after reading the
software agreement, I said screw you and went back too just visiting
the NASA website.
