Default Sorta OT - My ISP Has Dropped RFC

Tried to access RFC with Agent, via Charter.net, and no go. They said
they dropped it about a month ago and will not be adding it back.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Google that's free?

Thanks,
Carol, who is enjoying the warm fuzzies here

The best free one I've heard of is:

http://aioe.org/

I have no personal experience with it.

Click on one of my posts, and then click 'reply' and it will come up with
the one I use, something like motzarella. DH got this one for me after my
ISP dropped the groups, and I had used google to the point of frustration.

I can't tell you how to get it, though. It didn't look that simple to set
up; but you may be an ole' hand at the computer.
So far I have absolutely no fault with it. If you find no other, give it a
try.

There is a good free usenet server that I use at work that I found by
googling. I'll write the name of it down tonight and get back to you. :-)

Assuming you are using OE to read Groups? Go to TOOLS/ACCOUNTS and set up a
new NEWS group using

nntp.aioe.org

As the server and put some fictitious address for yourself to stop spam

Has all the Groups you can want and allows both read and posts. I have been
using it for years

From what I have read, news.motzarella.org is more reliable than aioe.
I have both set up and use motzarella most days (it's not my primary
feed, however) and it's fine. I've read complaints of aioe being up and
down.

WHAT? Are they insane??? It's a "high activity" newsgroup according
to Google. Charter must be looking for an excuse to drop their news
servers due to lack of interest.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Google that's free?

Look up "free servers" and try them out. It's going to be hard to
find a free server that will let you read AND post.

http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Usenet..._News_Servers/

I'd try http://news.aioe.org/ first.

Motzarella has a few problem the other day, but the outages are
rare and it wokrs well. Most of the free servers die after a
while, though. Or become pay servers - like individual.net.

I haven't even tried aioe yet, other than downloaded the groups
list.

What are the type of problems with Motzarella; just not being able to get on
or receive? I haven't notice any yet. Fingers crossed.

You should be okay with Motzarella. I can't describe the outages Steve
mentioned because I've never seen one; but they would probably take one of
two forms: server's down for a bit, or the *route* between you and the
server has a hole. It's not always a site/server outage (this is not
limited to Usenet, I mean for any service) that shows up as a dead end;
sometimes there's a metaphorical roadblock between A and B. A
packet-switched network like the Internet is supposed to be able to adjust
to midpath blockage by routing traffic around it, but that doesn't always
happen, or at least it doesn't happen at the speed of light.

I use it once in a while, but too often to really have a read on it. My
note above was based on what I've read in newsgroups dedicated to news
server discussion. Just making that clear; I wasn't very specific before.
