I just got a great new gadget that I thought anyone who enjoys cooking would
be interested in. It's called StirChef, and it's a hands free, cordless saucepan stirrer. It only cost $29.95 (I brought mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond) and includes the batteries, a silicon splashguard (to keep the bottom clean) and has a continuous and intermittent setting (for when a recipe calls for only occasional stirring). I've used it for risotto, rice pudding, gravy, and sauces (to name a few things), and it really works great. Instead of being stuck at the stove stirring, I was freed up to set the table, watch TV and even run out to the store for a thing or two I forgot for the meal! It has plenty of power (I've used it for polenta) and the batteries last a long time - the manufacturer says they will last 5 hours on continuous run or 10 hours on intermittent - I'm still on my 1st set of batteries and have used it over 12 times for about a total of 4 hours and the batteries are still going strong. If you want more info they have a web site - www.stirchef.com that you can check out. |

I just got a great new gadget that I thought anyone who enjoys cooking would be interested in. ease shouldn't dictate cooking methods.... enjoyment should. i prefer to be involved with my food on a tactile level. if you're too lazy to stir, you're too lazy to cook: you're part of the mcdonalds generation, so just stay there and keep our NGs uncluttered. sorry all, on a rant today.... |

Ease shouldn't dictate cooking methods...? So you cook over an open fire? In ceramic containers? Enjoyment SHOULD. Should, you say? Like it's a freakin rule of life? i prefer to be involved with my food on a tactile level. Terrific. That's what *you* prefer. Hardly a recommendation for everyone. if you're too lazy to stir, you're too lazy to cook: you're part of the mcdonalds generation, so just stay there and keep our NGs uncluttered. What incredible nonsense. What astonishing nerve to posit what "i prefer" as a standard against which others should be judged. What amazingly unfounded arrogance to talk about "our NGs" as though it were a fact. sorry all, on a rant today.... Save it. Your rant is crap. Your criteria for judging are crap. Your attitude is crap. Pastorio |

LOL I just spent the weekend cooking over a fire in ceramic containers (3 of them) and enjoyment was exactly why we had this weekend. I'd say it was fairly "easy" too, or I wouldn't have loaded about 500 pounds of ceramics and charcoal and another couple hundred pounds of food and equipment into the van and driven about 200 miles. BUT, your point is otherwise legitimate. BOB |

Jack SPAM Interesting idea though. There are magnetic hot/stir plates availlable for use in chemistry labs. I've often thought they would be great for home use for things like custards. I should look them up in a supply catalog sometime just to see how much they cost. Greg Zywicki |

What the hell are you talking about? Ease shouldn't dictate cooking methods...? So you cook over an open fire? In ceramic containers? there's an incredibly huge difference between cooking over an open fire, and using a tool that STIRS for you. STIRS. Enjoyment SHOULD. Should, you say? Like it's a freakin rule of life? no, most certainly not. but one shouldn't be a member of a FOOD newsgroup if one doesn't enjoy cooking. and getting to the point where you're not even stirring is hardly enjoying cooking. it's hardly cooking! Terrific. That's what *you* prefer. Hardly a recommendation for everyone. precisely. which is why i said "i prefer." What incredible nonsense.
