All "non essential services" are shut down... Why? The state budget wasn't passed. The irony is the shutdown of tourism services in an area that depends so heavily on tourism.... ...fred |

The Federal government shuts down every couple of years as a matter of course because a budget isn't approved. We still keep plodding along. Surprise! Jill |

Andy I didn't even notice.... ..fred All "non essential services" are shut down... Why? The new budget goes into effect on July 1. All of the budget terms were agreed upon but our governor wants to include a weasel tax on electricity to go into some sort of alternative energy fund. The senate won't agree because they rightfully see it as a tax. By weasel tax I mean these taxes that are applied on things like phone/utility service. Then do that because they don't want to increase income taxes so they try to pull it out of your pocket in a sneaky fashion. The reality is probably ever business (except Ford And GM) is working on ideas for fuel efficiency improvements and other energy sources. We certainly don't need another tax on electricity to be squandered for who knows what. The state is "closed" because until the budget is passed there is technically no money to pay salaries etc. |

The Federal government shuts down every couple of years as a matter of course because a budget isn't approved. We still keep plodding along. Surprise! Last July, the state of New Jersey was shut down for one or two weeks while Governor Corzine locked horns with the state legislators to hammer out a new budget. In PA, the casinos got a court order to stay open, but that strategy didn't work in NJ, so the casinos in Atlantic City had to close because the state workers who monitor them for legal compliance were all furloughed. |
