What kind of a cop would even think to run the plates on the

I'm sure he just did it out of curiosity and for kicks (at
first). Nowdays most beat/traffic cops, with their computers on
the dashbord, run about 75% of the plates they're behind unless
their on the way to donuts or talking on their cell phones. It
takes all of 5 seconds.

You would be surprised how many cars and trucks are running around out
there with expired or switched plates, but I did a lot of them out of
curiosity. People would be amazed at the information that pops up on
those computers.

Damn, Dave! Where were you last week when people were running stop signs
and making fast (but illegal) turns in front of me at stop lights when I had
the right of way?!

One woman I saw had her neck craned around, looking at her back seat. She
wasn't on a cell phone AFAIK but maybe she was; those ear bud things (should
be illegal) make it difficult to tell. I do know she was talking to a child
(or two) in the back seat. She paused briefly at the stop sign but then
just came on through without even looking. Good thing I was noting her
behavior otherwise she'd have plowed right into my car.

That sort of thing was the inspiration for DAMM, Drunks Against Mad
Mothers. Some mother is driving down the road, and turns around to
scold her brats in the back seat, then runs off the road and hits an
innocent drunk who is walking down the sidewalk with his 40oz. in his
paper bag.

If she was also engaged on her cell phone, then all the worse.

PEOPLE WHO TALK ON THEIR CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING ARE AS BAD AS DRUNK
DRIVERS, at least drunk drivers who are not very far over the absurdly
low legal limits in most states (0.08%).

I think that whole idea was pretty much self realizing. It was the
first thing I thought of when I learned of MADD.

DRIVERS, at least drunk drivers who are not very far over the absurdly

The whole institution is the epitome of hypocrisy. Any pretense of
public good was long ago abandoned in favor if raw greed. It's now
just rank revenue generation, pure and simple. OTOH, the pursuit of
filthy lucre has produced some valid results. Who is crazy enough to
risk having to pay $5-10K for a couple beers? Certainly not me.

Um, not sure why this is a reply to my post? I wasn't drinking and driving.
I was merely going to the store to buy toilet paper.

In Texas, their computers need a little more information. My license
plates were Ham radio plates, and I had the exact same plates on my car
and my truck (I owned the car, first). When driving the truck, I was
pulled over twice, because it says the plates belong to a Mercedes, not
on a 3/4 ton Ford truck. It only took a few minutes to clear up the
problem, but Texas needs to make some changes, so they can stop pulling
over us innocent Ham radio operators. Well, I am innocent. Sometimes. ;-)

I was out on my bike and almost got hit by a woman backing out of her
driveway. I knew that she wasn't watching so I rang the bell, figuring she
would hear, since the windows were open but ended up having to steer clear
of her and yelled at her to watch where she is going. She started screaming
at me so I went back and asked her was she was saying. She told me I should
not have been so abusive. I wasn't abusive, I yelled at her to get her
attention so she wouldn't hit me. Then she said she didn't see me. Of
course not. She wasn't looking when she backed out. I knew she wasn't
looking. She was looking straight ahead while backing up.

That should not happen here. The default jurisdiction was Ontario, and
because the province's driver licence and vehicle registration data bases
were linked we had extensive access to both. We could get out of province
plate information including all 50 US states. The only time the owner's
name would show up was if they had been involved in an incident here and
had a d/l generated to track it.

Well, I am innocent. Sometimes. ;-)

Maybe we can get together sometime when you're not :-)

Pine needles don't appeal to me so I thought I'd go get some more toilet
paper before it came down to that

It was a response, and inspired by reading your post, but it wasn't
directed AT you. I don't have any hostility toward you personally.
You've just been the worthy recipient of some posts against bad
ingredients.
I'm glad you didn't get hit by an inattentive driver.

This is rather off topic, but when I was camping once, I had to use a
dollar to "finish up"... have you ever tried wiping with 3 quarters, 2
dimes and a nickel? :romising to behave now::

Were there no leaves that would have sufficed?
We always make sure to bring TP, and a shovel.
