Why would anyone need to go to a spammers link to download Firefox
when they can go to http://www.mozilla.com and get it directly?

Could it be the Google encouraged click revenue from googlepages
(Google, the spammers best friend)?

This is how desperate Google is to get people to install their
Google Toolbar spyware - they have to pay people to spam the
newsgroups peddling their wares.

Our local PBS station has a computer show that mentioned using European
search engines like "Lycos" where they are forbidden by law to collect
data on people using the search engine.

Revenue from googlepages? Please tell, how does clicking on a free website
give Google revenue? You can't have advertisements of any kind on a
Googlepage, so exactly where does this alleged claimed click revenue come
from? I'm sure you wouldn't make a statement like that without knowing
what you are talking about.

Utter nonsense.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/googleupdater/

"These days, almost every single toolbar that is released gathers and
sends user browsing and search information to the toolbar's maker so they
can target ads at them. Google's toolbar also collects the browsing habits
of its users, but only if they enable the Page Rank feature deliberately.
There is a very clear warning that the user's browsing history will be
sent to Google, and Google lets the user decide if they want that to
happen.

Unlike other toolbars, this information gathering is used only to make
Google a better, more accurate search engine, not to target advertisements
at the user. Google doesn't even make money from the information they
collect, except indirectly by making their service better."

The article does go on to castigate Google for its automatic update.

It can't be spyware if you have to opt in. Spyware does stuff without you
knowing about it.

You know the saying: A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Someone doesn't understand how AdWords works.

That person should either grow up or get off the internet. It's not a
happy place for a paranoid schizophrenic.
