I'm on deck to provide the evening meal at the House on Sunday, June 24.
How much fun is this going to be! LOL!

Do you get to plan the meal out or do they give you a "suggested" menu? If
it's up to you, my head's already spinning on ideas. LOL. How fun!

Sounds like fun! Post your ideas on the menu. Who is footing the bill on
this one?

No, I did not get the memo. Was it in post form or via email?

I believe Ronald McDonald House may get some government funding but the
majority of the funds come from contributions from the public or from area
businesses. Our local rock station does "radiothon" to raise funds for the
Memphis Ronald McDonald House every year. The morning crew jocks stay on
the air for 48 hours straight. There's a company (can't recall the name)
that supplies the phone lines for contributions and people to man them.

Funny, they are talking about it on the radio right now. Here's a link:

Hit send too fast. I was going to suggest that perhaps some RFCers
might be interested in donating if Barb was going to have to foot the
bill herself.

Michael

The Ronald McDonald House's are all over the country. You might want to
consider checking for one in the St. Louis area so the proceeds will go to
your local RMH. Check my other reply to you; there's a link to our local
"Radiothon" which is coming up to support RMH. There are lots of events and
things to raise money. The kids who come to RMH in Memphis are going to St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital (at no charge) for cancer treatment.

Sorry, Michael, I was only half kidding. Of course people will be
chipping in. RFC don't need no cookbook to fund a RMH Feed!

The RMH's are all over the country. Send contributions to the one nearest
you, rather than to Minnesota (no offense, Barb!). Rock103 in Memphis is
gearing up for their annual "radiothon":

http://www.rock103.com/pages/rmh/

The proceeds go to the local Ronald McDonald House, which houses the
families of kids (and the kids who don't have to stay in the hospital) who
are here for cancer treatments at St. Jude.

I know that, but I know this money will go to someone making
dinner for people.

That is great. For others who have Ronald McDonald Houses near them
there are other things that you can do that require little or no money
and probably not a long commitment.

I figure to consult with a number of folks. 8-) One woman I'll speak
with at length is the woman who prepares dinner at church every
Wednesday night * 130-150 people weekly. Wednesday is church night for
Lutherans as well as other Christian denominations, I'm guessing.
Choirs practice, confirmation classes, etc. For $4 per adult and $2.50
(I think) for a kid (with a max of $13/family), anyone can show up for
dinner and not have to worry about providing dinner at home and
shuttling kids to and from church. (This congregation has a lot of kids
- anklebiters to teens.) I helped serve a meal about 3-4 weeks ago.
On Thursday nights the church offers a meal to anyone in the community
who needs food in their belly * 20-70 folks. She cooks for that, too; I
suspect that any leftovers from Wednesday are served on Thursday, with
additional vittles added if needed. I haven't been involved in one of
those yet. I am also well acquainted with a guy who's been in the
hotel/hospitality/restaurant business.

Who is footing the bill on this one?
Michael

Hmmm. Good question. :-) Four people contacted me on Wednesday with
pledges totalling enough to fund, I believe, TWO dinners. Unsolicited.
You know that funny feeling you get in your nose at about the time your
eyes start to water up? It was there on Wednesday and it's there now.

I cannot tell you how excited I am to do a dinner where the placard
informing the residents from whence the meal comes says something like,
"This evening's meal is provided by folks in other parts of the country
who have never met each other except online." 8-) Every time I hear
about the pervs who prey on people they find online, I think about the
many people I am acquainted with here who love to feed people and do
what they can to make it happen, whether it be by way of a printed
cookbook, by donation to their local foodshelf, or any other way that is
appropriate. It's pretty cool. Way cool. More, even, that that * if
what I'm up to here provides an idea and the impetus to do something
similar where *you* live ‹ rock on!

But wait! Wait! There's more! I sent the Gedney folks a few pictures
from my Tuesday evening (me and a couple kids wearing pickle hats) and
asked if they would pony up for a meal. I'd been told by a former
executive there to not be too optimistic (only because budgeting for the
year has already been done) about a positive response. He was wrong.
:-) Gedney's CEO is a great guy and their new VP for Marketing (my
primary contact for my involvement with them) blew me away with not only
his enthusiasm for my request, but also the *speed* with which they
replied. Kleenex, anyone? When I reported this to a friend, the
reply was that good ideas and good people produce good results. May it
be so.

So it appears that I could have the financial wherewithal to feed those
folks three times. I won't be holding anyone to anything until I've got
things better figured out. I'll put the touch on a couple local foodies
for help with at least one meal and the June 24 commitment is the day
before my natal day * I expect Beck and Whatshisname to be in town; this
kind of activity will be good for them to be involved in.

I'm proceeding cautiously (a new concept for me) and I sleep with a guy
who teaches Project Management at a Major University here. If I can
keep him under control, it should be fine.

Yup. The local House site provides info about regular commitments
weekly, a regular commitment less frequently, and opportunities for
service as needed. They appear to be very well organized.

More than fun, what a pleasure to "give" your talents to sick children and their
families.

Good for you.

Dimitri

For those who do not know;

http://www.rmhc.com/rmhc/index/about.html

The three core programs of RMHC - the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald
Family Room and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile - are focused on helping families in
need. Our cornerstone Ronald McDonald House program began in 1974 based on a
simple idea: Provide a "home away from home" for families of seriously ill
children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Since that time, more than 10
million families around the world have benefited from the comfort provided by a
Ronald McDonald House.

Barb will not foot this bill herself. And I'm not soliciting anything
right now.
