Needlelpoint.

Real men also change diapers, they do dishes, they get up at 2am for
the baby. In other words, real men are not limited to watching sports
and burping.

Needlepoint is supposedly a common hobby for
surgeons, and that is a predominantly male specialty.

Rob's PhD advisor, the late Dr. Harold Paulus, crocheted. He was a
delightful man, about 6'7" tall and he took up the hobby when a
grandchild was to be baptized and he decided that he would make the
baby's christening gown!!! That was his first project. There were a
lot of maroon and gold crocheted tams bestowed on folks at the
University of Minnesota. :-) Alex rest his soul.

King Edward the VII (The Duke of Windsor) relates in his biography his
practice of crocheting, as taught him, as a child, by his mother, during
W.W.II, but he also relates how he kept it hidden, as he did not think
the sight of a British Major General crocheting as he was driven around
the back roads of France while the bombs were falling to be a
particularly inspiring sight.

I have been crocheting since I was six, I create and sell my own patterns at
local yarn stores, I'd feel much confidence in seeing a major general
crocheting, I know how well it focuses the mind and allows you to concentrate
on the problems at hand.

I did not relate the anecdote well, to read the Dukes description is to
imagine a rather rickety car jolting over the back roads of france with
a British major general bouncing around in the back crocheting, as the
Duke tells it its a very funny image, very self referentially ironic.

I am fairly sure its in his book "A Kings Story."
