I bought a crate of these at Costco the other day and I have to say
these are some seriously good eating! Way juicier than Bartlett's. Ok,
I admit, until last year when I was sent a gift of the Royal Riviera
pears from Harry & David, I'd never tried one that I can remember. Now,
I'm seriously hooked. There were about 16 pears in the crate...we're
down to 2.

Next on my list...Bosc.

Aren't they though! I have always enjoyed the various types of pears.
This is my favorite coffee cake recipe which happens to use pears.
People rave over this, honest.

Pear Ginger Coffee Cake

Recipe By :Penzeys (Early Summer 2003) Catalog
Serving Size : 12 Preparation Time :0:15
Categories : Breakfast Cakes

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups flour -- sifted
1 1/2 cups pears, peeled and diced into 1/4-1/2" cube
1/4 cup cinnamon sugar -- (mixed my own)
2 tablespoons crystallized ginger -- finely chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9x13 glass pan and set aside.
Stir the baking soda into the buttermilk and set aside
Cream the shortening, salt and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add
the egg and vanilla and mix well.
Alternately add the buttermilk and flour to the mixing bowl, beating
well after each addition.
Fold in the pears and pour into greased pan. Mix together the cinnamon
sugar and chopped cystallized ginger. Sprinkle evenly over the top of cake.
Bake 35-40 min or until a toothpick comes out clean.

I like to keep a Comice around 'till it's brown-yellow and quite soft.
Eat it over the sink. Yuuuum.

Bosc are nowhere near the Doyenne du Comice, which may be the best
eating fruit (IMHO), including many tropical foods eaten fresh in the
tropics. in fact, Bosc is not appreciably better than bartlett
(different pears of course, Bosc has a stronger flavor). Interestingly,
pears have to be picked unripe, so those you find in stores are as good
or better than homegrown.

Yep, that would be the one. And you can too. I do. I don't like the skin much...tough
stuff that. So I slice them in half and eat them with a spoon. Very juicy and sweet
and delicious
