#5 for me, of course. I love fruitcake and plan on making a batch

Chris Dabney's cook-in, at her request.

Some of you must have had some nasty fruitcake experiences. I
have to admit that if my exposure to fruitcakes was limited to
those store bought or mail order things I would be less than
impressed. For as long as I can remember my mother has made
incredible fruitcakes, rick, sweet, fruity cakes, loaded with
preserved fruits and stabilized with brandy. I love them and
started making them myself. That is one of the gret things about
the Christmas season.

My mom made wonderful fruitcake. I think it's like liver or Miracle
Whip. Either you love it or you hate it.

Yep, I was traumatized by a fruitcake as a kid - and I don't mean the creepy
neighbor. Granted it was a
store-bought-fossilized-found-an-articulated-dinosaur-bone fruitcake, so
maybe if I tried a real fruitcake I'd change my mind.

Then again, probably not.

If someone wants to give me a Christmassy-treat, I'm open to mixed nuts. Or
Christmas-themed peeps.

If fruitcake is like liver or Miracle Whip, you're doing it wrong. :-)

Now THAT was funny!

I used to make a nice fruitcake (very UNLIKE Miracle Whip or liver)
containing a small amo8nt of dough enclosing just pecans, pineapple,
and cherries. It was yummy but more trouble than it was worth.
Cheesecake is a LOT more popular at our house.

Store-bought fruitcakes tend to be pretty bad--the yucky
ultra-sweet ones with one-dimensional flavor. Hmm. Maybe
this year, I should make a batch. I have lots of freezer
space after a debacle, so I can store fruitcake for
decades--if I manage not to think about it and, hence, eat it.
