Going nuts trying to get information on appliances - we are looking at the
usual fridge, cooktop, separate wall oven, dishwasher and range hood. Would
like all to be in stainless steel and have a total budget of $6000. We have
pretty much settled on the 45" Thermador cooktop with star burners, and a
Bosch dishwasher. I like the look of the large bottom-freezer GE Profile
refrigerator, but have no feedback anywhere on reliability. I am totally
stumped when it comes to a wall oven.

We want a single wall oven 30" wide, simple controls, self cleaning,
electric, does not have to be convection, and extremely reliable. Also, the
rest of the appliances, although we''ve settled on them pretty much, we want
simplicity and reliability above anything else. Don't need or want a
"smart" refrigerator, or a pile of features on the dishwasher. I am
enamored with commercial appliances, like the old Hobart dishwashers, you
just slide the basket in and lock the door. The dishes come out clean, with
no fussing with controls.

Do you folks here anve any recommendations for me, based on your own
expereinces, or maybe what I should avoid? Please don't recommend anything
KitchenAid, I won't buy it. I hate my dishwasher, and would never buy
another KA appliance. Don't really care about mixing brands - I know some
folks like to have all one brand, and that's dumb to me. I love the colored
Viking stuff, but haven't heard anything good about it, and I can't afford
it anyway.

Thanks.

Do you employ a house-cleaner? If not, avoid stainless steel, it'll show
every mark, finger print etc.

There are some new metallic finishes out that are easier to maintain.
Stainless is nice, but it does show everything including abrasions.

Mine doesn't... Easiest thing in the world to clean, too. Has a nice
satin finish.

But all the magazines show beautiful clean stainless steel appliances. They
never mention that it is hard to keep clean. Come on... I'm sure they'd
mention if stainless were a pain to maintain ;-)

Mine as well. It shows no smears or dirt at all. It is stainless with a
satin/brushed finished.

Strange. Mine does (Bosch oven). I advised friends not to buy SS
appliances when they renovated their kitchen but they did. They regretted
not taking my advice.

YMMV

You must be the sort of consumer of which every manufacturer dreams;-)
Remember, magazines rely on advertising and when it comes to interior
decorating, the LOOK is more important than the upkeep. Otherwise, they
wouldn't show so many of those upscale appliances that have an appalling
records of repair.

IMO, stainless is easier to maintain than white, I have a cheapo KA gas
cooktop and my other place and it's a pain to keep clean. My Wolf is much
easier, though the immediate cooking area is not stainless. WD-40 works
very well on stainless for cleaning. Just wipe it off well with paper
towels. The stink goes away quickly.

You, me, thousands of hospitals, and thousands of hotel kitchens, all
happy! Must be ok then... I find that burnt on things may need a
little soaking time, but 99% comes off with a damp cloth and washing-up
liquid. Had mine over a year, and never needed anything stronger. For
a 'just out of the show-room' shine on top of a regular clean, window
cleaner works as well as anything, but usually all it gets is a rub over
with some kitchen paper while still damp to gloss it up.

I like our Maytag double electric ovens, with black glass fronts. They meet
all your qualifications. The top one is self-cleaning. I squirt Windex on
them to keep the fronts looking new. We also have the Maytag Ceran flat
cooktop. It's wonderful and a big improvement over other stoves in my
experience.

I would avoid using the specific "Stainless steel" cleaners as they are very
greasy / oily and seem to coat everything with a film that does, in fact,
make fingerprints and the like show up like crazy! My appliance dealer gave
me some from Hadco, the appliance distributor. I wipe mine down with my
dishrag (Dawn and water) and they look as good today as they did 7 years
ago. Used the SS cleaner once and scrubbed it off after it looked like crap
from smudges and fingerprints.

My tech who came and changed a faulty bit for me recommended using a
microfibre cleaning cloth and plain warm water, or, at most, washing up
water, so that's what I do.

I bought an "E-cloth" from lakeland when i was in the UK last year. I was
assured that it would clean SS easily. That hasn't been my experience.
Maybe it's a guy thing, house-cleaning is not in our genes:-)
