I am remodeling my kitchen. We will be installing granite countertops and a
Kohler Executive Chef cast iron *undermount* sink, which weighs 144 pounds. The granite guys say they usually drill holes in the underside of the granite for anchors to hold an undermount sink. The granite guys suggested that their anchors would not be strong enough to hang a cast iron 144 pound sink. They said they could install a couple of 2x4's to hold up the sink. We are having the cabinets custom made by a skilled cabinet-maker. What suggestions do you have for supporting the weight of a cast iron undermount sink with a granite countertop? I don't want something ugly, like 2x4's, in the under-sink cabinet. By the way, an email copy of your response would be appreciated, in addition to posting here to the group. -- Thomas A. I believe that the sinks are supported completely by the cabinetry and are sealed to the granite with silicone. If they were to beef up the cabinetry to hold your heavier sink (with 2x4s or otherwise), how might you see it? There would certainly not be anything visible unless you got inside the cabinet with a flashlight... HTH, -- Kenneth If you email... Please remove the "SPAMLESS." |

I would trust the advice of the person fabricating the counter. Kohler specifies that a supporting frame be built. You can see the installation instructions he http://www.us.kohler.com/onlinecatal.../1007262_2.pdf |

Bruno, Champaign, Illinois, USA http://www.tombruno.com I have the exact same setup although I don't have my Granite installed yet. My granite guy insisted the sink be installed before he would even measure the job. The cabinet installers had no trouble building a frame in my 36 inch sink base cabinet and mounting the sink flush with the plywood top. Everything seems solid. The granite will go over the sink and be silicone sealed when complete. Dan. |
