Default Amana refrig.

Has anyone had a problem with an Amana bottom freezer refrig,? We bought one
a week ago and it cooled for an hour or so and quit. Maytag has bought
Amana and so the Maytag man came and said they forgot to put freon in at the
factory. OK, all is well. Now 2 days later it has quit again. We have bought
lots of refrigerators over the years but never one like this. Has anyone
else had a problem with this co.?

Default Amana refrig.

We took delivery of an Amana bottom freezer 21 cu ft (or is it 22?)
refrigerator last January and the performance has been perfect.

Only criticism might be that the icecube maker (optional extra) is pretty
noisy when it refills.

===
Maytag? Yes. Just about everyone who has bought one of their appliances in
the
past five or so years. If you google you will find lots of Maytag issues. I
had
problems with my Amana range and Maytag dryer. Neither lasted five years. I
am very satisfied
with my Jenn-Air (Maytag) fridge, however (so far--a little over a year).
Can you
get a refund or exchange?

I guess we just got the bad one. That sounds exactly like ours. It has a
stainless steel front and filtered water. It is perfect if only it would
work. I hope it gets taken care of tomorrow but I don't know if I will ever
trust it.

Ha, I doubt it. In fact on the receipt it says no refunds or exchanges. I
put it on my visa so they might help. The co. has been very nice and
helpful but of course today being Sun. no one is around. My husband has
meds that must be kept cold so I have been scrounging for help.

The repair person who came out had no way to know if the factory failed to
charge the system with freon. Since it cooled for an hour, it had to have
some refrigerant. All appliances are tested at the factory, so it had to
have passed the quality control tests before it was shipped. After the
service tech put more refrigerant in your system it cooled for a while
longer. Simple logic indicates that there is a leak. The leak could have
been the result of a manufacturing or material fault or could have occurred
in shipping. Your dealer may have accidentally damaged the unit.

Here is the basic warranty as listed on the Amana website:
Full warranty one year parts and labor
Five years limited warranty on sealed system components and interior liners

Your dealer should be able to fix the problem or refer you to an authorized
service center. Make sure that you tell them that you won't settle for
someone coming out and putting more refrigerant in the system. I would sit
down right now and start a journal listing what has occurred so far. Make
sure you list the date and time of phone calls, who you talked to, what they
said, and what actions were taken. You do have some rights based on the
fact that you used a credit card. The terms are generally printed in very
small type in the agreement you signed and may be on the back of your
statement. You have a limited time to dispute the charges so make sure you
look into it ASAP. Consumers also have rights in most states. You state's
Attorney General's office most likely has a consumer protection division.
You could contact them for specifics.

Frankly, I would ask the dealer to take the refrigerator back and exchange
it for an identical or better model at no expense to you. After all, you
have been terribly inconvenienced. They sold you a defective unit. If they
won't take it back, then I would tell them that you are going to dispute the
charge with the credit card company. You have a right to expect a working
appliance. It doesn't matter what they put on your receipt. I would go to
the dealer and talk to a manager face-to-face - it will be harder for them
to ignore you in person than on the phone. If the person you talk to
doesn't give you a satisfactory answer, then work your way up the ladder.

My mom has had 2 or 3 Amana refrigerators in her lifetime, the most current
one purchased 4 years ago when they built a new house. They have worked
fine for her. She has the freezer on the bottom.

My Amana fridge (freezer on top) has worked fine for almost 3 years now.

I would go raise hell at the appliance store. Something isn't right with
that fridge.

Good luck. I hope that the dealer will take care of it for you without any
trouble. I always try to start out very pleasant and hope for the best. I
had a very bad experience recently with a contractor that lead to legal
action on my part. When I saw that things were going badly I started to
document every detail. I followed up every conversation with a letter or
email and took lots of pictures. When it came time to get an attorney, all
the work was done. At the arbitration hearing I had everything well
documented and he had nothing. Needles to say, things went my way and
having everything documented made a very stressful situation more
manageable. On a brighter note, I have had an Amana refrigerator for nearly
8 years and I am well satisfied. It is the best refrigerator that I ever
had. I know that they were bought by Maytag, so things may have changed.
My Jenn Air range (by Maytag) of the same age is poorly designed and has had
some major problems.

Well, it is "fixed" I hope. As you can tell I am not real confident but
Proven Products, where we bought it has said they will bring us a new one if
this doesn't work and they have called twice today to follow up. The Maytag
man found a connection that had come loose and he re sartered(sp) it. He
explained why the leak did not show up before but it still doesn't make
sense to me. Thank you again.

It sounds like they are trying. It will most likely work fin for years or
go bad quickly. I had a KitchenAid dishwasher that was bad out of the box.
I wish I had demanded that the store take it back but I let them fix it.
The same problem occured again later, but fortunately it still under
warranty.

I've had mine since October 27 and love it! No problems. The 21 cu ft
model with the bottom freezer drawer. Woo-hoo!! It replaced a 2-1/2
year old Whirlpool that I absolutely hated!

We had a 1988 ( or so) GE that ran up a storm ,got struck by lightning and
still ran, but I hated it. I don't think it will ever quit. Then we got the
Amana which couldn't seem to run for very long periods. I don't want to
jinx things but it may be fixed now. I love the way it looks and the freezer
on the bottom, the easy to get to the refrigerator section. the filtered
water, everything. I also liked hearing other people say good things about
their Amanas, it gives me hope that this was just a fluke.
