Default Ranges: Thermador v. Viking

My wife and I have finally (we think) narrowed our choice for a new
range between two. Making choices is foreign to us. So, would any of
you kindly give us some advice?

- Viking VGIC (or SC)36-6B: the six burner Viking range, maybe
self-cleaning, maybe not.
- Thermador PRG366US: Six round (not star).

One of the big questions we have is the price difference. I can find
the Viking w/o self-cleaning for about $200 more than the Thermador
with. With self-cleaning, the Viking is over $600 more.

What drives this price difference and do you think it's worth it? The
Viking oven is larger, 5.0 cu ft vs. 4.6. Is there anything else we
should consider?

Thanks again for your help.

Well Tim Creehan owner of Beach Walk Cafe' in Destin FL.
Very well known by the American Culinary Federation.
Got the DiRoNa award in 1997.
Was called to be the ( Chef de cuisine ) for the Amy Grant ,Vince Gill
wedding .
Has been in Peoples Magazine and was interviewed by NBC TV show EXTRA.
Has been the cook of choice for Cybill Sheperd, Timothy Hutton and
Catherine Crosby
to list a few. I have been to many of his famous cooking classes around the
country with
many associate chefs and I asked um ..... what stove do you use in your home
???
The answer was DCS as best bang for the buck so we put one in our new home
setup and
have gotten rave comments by all those that have come here to show off there
skills.
Hope that helps a little.

Did you looked at and excluded Dacor? We are on the verge of choosing
Dacor cooktop and double wall ovens. We have several friends who have
done so and are all very happy with that decision.
Cheers,
Kent

We have a Viking range and the functionality is great, but the
reliability stinks and the customer service is much worse. They
originally provided knobs that broke in normal use and thought it was
completely reasonable that a knob should only last two years and that I
should happily pay $35 each for replacements. (They finally changed the
design, but no free replacement parts for the suckers who bought the
defective ones.) The igniters for the oven run several hundred bucks a
pop and according to the customer (non)service reps have an expected
service life of 2-3 years. We've had several welds break in the frame
and are just living with it because repairs will run into the thousands.
Several of the welds on the oven racks have recetly let go. Viking of
course denies that there is any possibility of a manufacturing issue
there. Makes me yearn for my 60 year old Caloric.

Avoid Viking like the plague.

I have a Viking (4 burner + griddle), and have to say that my experience
does not match yours. We did have one of the igniters go after about 5
years, and it cost us about $60 for the part + labor. Frame is solid. The
decals on the front of the range started to flake off very quickly, but
other than that it's been fine for us. YMMV.

I had a Viking 36" range for 5 years, newly purchased in 1992. The
oven rack was broken upon arrival, which was remedied with a new one
some weeks later. But I went through three (3) oven temp sensors at
a couple hundred bucks a pop between parts and labor. Calls to Viking
tried to blame it on bad currents from our electical utility company.
I'll never buy another. Next house I bought a Garland cooktop - it
was fantastic and I miss it dearly. I'll almost certainly buy a Blue
Star for the next house, although I still keep an eye out for a used
Garland.
